HANOVER, N.H. — The Ivy League announced the results of its 2021 Men's Soccer Preseason Media Poll today with Dartmouth picked to finish fifth, despite the team finishing in at least the top half of the league each of the last six seasons and 15 of the last 16.
Yale, the defending champion from the 2019 season, took the top spot in the poll with 11 first-place votes and 117 total points. The next three slots were tight with Cornell (97 points, one first-place vote) edging out Princeton (93, one first-place vote) and Penn (91, two first-place votes. The Big Green garnered the other pick to win the title but totaled 72 points, well ahead of Brown in sixth place with 44 points. Columbia (39) and Harvard (23) rounded out the poll.
Bo Oshoniyi, the Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer, will have to replace five of his top six scorers from the 2019 season with junior forward
David Alino the lone returnee. Dartmouth does have a fifth-year senior, seven seniors and eight juniors back on the pitch, however, while nine freshmen and six sophomores join the roster with an opportunity to see their first collegiate action following the COVID-19 pandemic that canceled the 2020 campaign.
Following a scrimmage at Burnham Field this Saturday against Southern New Hampshire at 5 p.m., the Big Green will open the season on the road for the first six games. Two of those opponents are ranked among the top 10 in the national preseason polls — Washington (No. 9), the host of Dartmouth's season opener on Sept. 10, and Georgetown (No. 5 and the 2019 national champion) on Sept. 25.
The home opener at Burnham Field will also be the Ivy League opener when Princeton comes to Hanover on Oct. 2 as the Big Green will look to prove the prognosticators wrong. All home games and Ivy League road games will be streamed live on ESPN+ this fall once again. Check the Dartmouth website for all available video streams this season.
