HANOVER, N.H. — The Big Green fell to Kansas by a score of 2-1, Thursday night. It's the second straight loss for Dartmouth (4-2-1) after starting the season on a five-game unbeaten streak.
Â
Fifth year midfielder
Erin Kawakami scored the lone goal and was assisted by freshman forward
Hannah Curtin and Freshman forward
Daisy Granholm.
Â
Action in the first half started quickly. The Jayhawks struck in the 14th minute when a shot from the edge of the box made its way past junior goalkeeper
Charlotte Cyr. The Big Green found itself down 1-0 early, but the Kansas (5-3-1) lead did not last long.
Â
Just 13 minutes later, in the 27th minute, Dartmouth tied the game at one goal apiece. The Big Green built up play through the midfield and two quick passes from Granholm and Curtin found the foot of Kawakami in the box and she knocked the ball towards the far post into the back of the net. The 1-1 score line held through the first 45 minutes and the teams went into half time tied.
Â
Dartmouth came out firing in the second half. The Big Green outshot the Jayhawks 6-3 in the second but could not find the back of the net. The two teams traded blows for the first 35 minutes until Kansas finally broke through in the 79th minute. Cyr faced two shots in quick succession at the mouth of the goal and was unable to save them both as the second one made its way past her.
Â
The Big Green continued to fight as the game waned to an end in the final 10 minutes but were unable to find a tying-goal to send the game into overtime. After 90 minutes the score was 2-1 and Dartmouth fell for just the second time this season.
Â
Dartmouth will have nine days off before their next game. The team returns to the field, Saturday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. at Brown for the first Ivy League action of the season.
