Holley Cromwell scored her third goal of the season

HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth field hockey team dropped its 2021 Ivy League opener, 3-1, to Cornell on Sunday afternoon at Chase Field.

Junior Holley Cromwell opened the scoring towards the end of the first quarter to give the Big Green a 1-0 lead. After a foul from the Big Red, sophomore Bronwyn Bird passed the ball through the Cornell defense and was redirected from senior Gracyn Campbell to Cromwell. Cromwell fired the ball into the bottom corner for her third goal of the season.

Cornell answered early into the second quarter after getting the ball into great position in front of the Big Green goal when Isabella Palde snuck the ball into the back of the net.

The Big Red grabbed another shortly before halftime and added to their tally again with a goal from a penalty corner with just over five minutes remaining in the contest.

Senior goalkeeper Isabella Santucci made several key saves early in the game for the Big Green.

"Today was a tough game, against a good team," Head Coach Mark Egner said. "We knew Cornell would provide a big test and for the first half we really looked like we were handling that test quite well. Second half they got the better of us offensively and did a great job of closing down our efforts to break into the circle. Today's only the start of Ivy League play and our team is motivated to take the lessons from this and come back stronger next week at Brown."

Dartmouth will travel to Brown on Saturday for their second Ivy League contest of the 2021 season. The game will be available on ESPN+.
