Alex Gu led Dartmouth to its best round at the 45th Macdonald Cup with a 1-under 69 on Sunday while
Jason Liu tied for ninth overall in the 80-player field as the Big Green wrapped up the final 18 holes with a 291 (+11). Dartmouth finished the three rounds in seventh place at 40-over par (880).
Host Yale took the top prize, beating out Michigan by four strokes with a 6-over 846, while Harvard claimed third, a dozen strokes off the pace. But Wolverine Will Anderson took medalist honors back home to Ann Arbor with a 6-under 204, three strokes ahead of his teammate Hunter Thomson and Brian Ma of the Crimson.
Gu teed off on the eighth hole of the 6,795-yard, par-70 Yale Golf Course, sinking a birdie to start quickly. The sophomore added two more birdies and made par on 13 holes to climb 26 spots in the standings into a tie for 41st (224, +14).
As for Liu, the graduate student showed why he is a three-time captain, playing through a twisted ankle suffered on the first hole of the tournament yesterday to shoot a 68-73-72—213 (+3). Throughout the three rounds, he played the par-4 holes at a combined 3-under par, tying for the best showing among all participants. Today he birdied two of his first four holes today and finished up with 12 pars as well to come in at 2-over par for the round.
Gu wasn't the only Big Green golfer to climb the leaderboard as
Mark Turner rose 12 rungs on the ladder into a tie for 24th thanks to matching Liu's 72 (+2) with three birdies to his name. Overall, the senior carded a 73-75-72—220 (+10) with 10 birdies overall, most on the Dartmouth squad.
Rookie
Charlie Baker contributed to the team score today with an 8-over 78, completing the three rounds at 19-over par (229) in a tie for 62nd. The fifth member of the team, senior
Charles Petrie, ended up two strokes behind Baker in a tie for 67th.
Dartmouth will be back in action next weekend at the Matthews Auto Collegiate hosted by Binghamton at The Links at Hiawatha Landing. The first of three rounds begins on Oct. 3.
