HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth men's soccer team secured its second-straight Ivy League victory Saturday night, knocking off Columbia 1-0. The Big Green extend its win streak at Burnham Field to three matches with the shutout win against the Lions.
Eric Sachleben's first goal of the season lifted the Big Green over the Lions. His goal, assisted by
Garrett Socas, came in the 35th minute of play. Dartmouth (5-5-3, 2-2-0 Ivy League) battled hard on defense to hand Columbia (1-6-5, 0-1-3 Ivy League) its first Ivy League loss of the season.
Defense led the way following Sachleben's goal, as the Big Green allowed just four shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper
Costi Christodoulou was up to the task, making four saves and posting his fourth shutout of the 2022 season. The Big Green were outshot by Columbia 11-7 over the course of the game, as both teams registered four shots on goal.
"For us to have two in a row in the Ivy League is big," Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer
Bo Oshoniyi said. "To get a shutout is always great for our guys. They just showed the grit and determination. It wasn't pretty, but these are games that good teams find a way to win. I'm proud of the boys for the way they battled and found a way to get the result tonight."
Dartmouth and Columbia battled evenly through the first portion of the opening half, as neither team could create many chances.
David Alino sent a shot at Columbia keeper Michael Collodi's net, which was stopped with ease in the seventh minute. This would be the lone shot either team would have in the first 30 minutes of play.
The lone goal of the match came in the 35th minute, as a corner kick led to a scrum in front of the Columbia net.
Eric Sachleben found a chance in front off of a pass from Socas and buried the opportunity to give the Big Green the one-goal advantage into the half.
Christodoulou kept Dartmouth in front in the opening moments of the second half, stopping three shots in quick succession to preserve the clean sheet.
Columbia earned its second yellow card of the match in the 68th minute, which was assessed to Alessandro Franciosa. The Big Green continued to play solid defense, despite a number of injury timeouts and substitutions.
The Lions made a push to tie the contest up at the halfway mark of the second frame, as Columbia had back-to-back corner kick opportunities. The Big Green turned both away between the 77th and 78th minutes, and Christodoulou came up with another save a few moments later to keep his team in front.
The Big Green kept the ball on Columbia's side of the field in the final minute of the match, and a corner kick gave Dartmouth a chance to run the clock down to pick up its fifth win of the year. The Big Green picked up their first win over Columbia since 2018 and improve to 31-23-9 against the Lions in the all-time series.
"In terms of the team, we've worked super hard all season," Sachleben said following the win. "We're finding our footing now and we're really coming together in the second half of the season. I'm super excited to see what we have in store for the last few games."
Dartmouth next takes the field next weekend on the road against Cornell. The Big Green take the Big Red in Ithaca, New York on Saturday, October 29 at 4 p.m. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet internationally.
