ITHACA, N.Y. — The Dartmouth men's soccer team's two-game Ivy League win streak was snapped on Saturday afternoon, as the Big Green fell to Cornell, 2-1. The Big Green fell behind by a pair of goals and were unable to recover before the final whistle.
Freshman
Oskar Magnusson scored the first goal of his collegiate career in the second half, while
Orrett Maine picked up an assist, his first point of the season. The Big Green played a chippy game, recording 25 fouls and a pair of yellow cards.
The Big Green almost found the back of the net at in the 29th minute, as a beautiful free kick from
Louis Weisdorf was redirected by
Sam Fenton in front of Cornell's goal. However, a goal line clearance by the Big Red kept the game scoreless.
Cornell struck first in the 37th minute to take a 1-0 lead. A free kick from Connor Drought set Henry Hylbert up for a header, which the Big Red capitalized on to take the lead.
A pair of yellow cards were distributed to both sides, as Cornell's Brandon Morales and Weisdorf each were written up. Dartmouth goalkeeper
Costi Christodoulou made a save in the 40th minute to keep Cornell's advantage at one goal as the first half ended.
The Big Red scored their second consecutive goal in the 56th minute to extend their lead. Emeka Eneli scored his fourth of the season on a strong individual effort.
The Big Green responded in the 69th minute of play, as Magnusson cashed in on a beautiful setup from Maine and
Kristian Feed. The freshman's shot beat Cornell's keeper, Ryan Friedberg, to trim Cornell's lead to one.
Cornell neutralized Dartmouth's attack for the remainder of the game. A yellow card was handed to
Fallou Ndiaye on a challenge in the final two minutes, as Dartmouth could not find an equalizer.
The Big Green fell to 41-30-5 against Cornell in the all-time series. The Big Red keep pace at the top of the standings in the Ivy League with their win over Dartmouth on Saturday.
The Big Green return to Burnham Field for their final home match of the season on Saturday, November 5. Kickoff for Dartmouth's senior day is set for 5 p.m. and the match will be streamed live on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet internationally.
