PHILADELPHIA — The Dartmouth men's soccer team dropped its first road match of the 2022 season on Saturday against Penn. The Big Green fell to the Quakers in a chippy contest which saw 26 fouls distributed between the teams.
Penn struck first with a goal in the opening minute of the match, which set the tone for the evening. The Quakers (7-1-1, 2-0-0 Ivy Leagye) struck again in the 37th minute to take a two-goal lead; one that the Big Green (2-4-3, 0-2-0 Ivy League) could not overcome.

Costi Christodoulou made six saves for the Big Green, while Dartmouth's defense thwarted 20 shots from Penn throughout the match. The Big Green challenged Penn's goalkeeper Nick Christoffersen with two shots on target, neither of which found the back of the net.
The Quakers got off to a furious start in the first minute of the game, as a shot from Penn's Stas Korzeniowski on an open chance was stopped by Christodoulou. However, Ben Stitz cashed in on the rebound off the first chance, giving Penn a 1-0 lead. Stitz has scored a goal in Penn's last six matches.
Garrett Scott was given a yellow card in the 29th minute, as both squads exchanged fouls throughout the first 30 minutes of play.
Following a save from Christodoulou on a Penn free kick, the Quakers cashed in for their second goal of the first half on a prolonged chance set up by a corner kick. Penn's Michael Hewes gave his team a 2-0 lead on a broken play in front of Christodoulou's net.
Ben Jenkins gave Christoffersen his first test of the game in the 40th minute with a shot taken well outside the 18-yard box. This would be Dartmouth's lone shot on goal of the half as the Big Green trailed by two following the first 45 minutes of play.
In the first minute of the second half, Hewes was handed a yellow card, as the physical play between the teams continued into the second frame.
Christodoulou came up large for the Big Green in the 64th minute, making a save on a chance inside the 18-yard box to keep his team's deficit at two. Both teams made numerous substitutions throughout the second half, as the squads combined to feature 13 reserve athletes.
The 78th minute saw a strong offensive sequence for the Quakers, which was defended well by the Big Green. Stitz took a shot, which was blocked in front by Scott, and the follow up chance by Penn was turned aside by Christodoulou.
Penn made one final attempt to extend its lead in the dying second of the match, which was saved by Dartmouth's keeper. The Big Green fell to 28-32-8 against Penn in the all-time series.
The Big Green return to Hanover for a midweek matchup with Hartford this Tuesday, Oct. 11. Kickoff at Burnham Field is slated for 7 p.m. and the contest will be streamed live on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet internationally.
