HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth men's soccer team dominated its match against Hartford from start to finish on Tuesday night in Hanover. The Big Green outshot their opponent 30-4 in a 3-0 nonconference victory at Burnham Field.
Ben Jenkins,
Garrett Socas and
Alex van Schalkwyk each found the back of the net for the first time this season against the Hawks. Goalkeeper
Costi Christodoulou registered his third shutout of the 2022 season, making a pair of saves in the win.
"It was a great result, any time we can get a shutout and score three goals is a positive," Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer
Bo Oshoniyi said. "I'm happy we were able to get a lot of guys in and get minutes for everybody. It's something that we're happy about going into the weekend."
The Big Green applied pressure in the early stages of the match, as
David Alino and Jenkins fired shots that would not reach the target. Dartmouth broke through in the ninth minute, as Jenkins made the most of a broken play in front of the net to put the Big Green up 1-0.
Dartmouth continued to batter Hartford's defense with opportunities throughout the first half. Jenkins had an opportunity to notch his second of the night in the 20th minute on a glorious chance. A strong defensive play from the Hawks' defenders kept the score at 1-0 after Jenkins got past the keeper.
A pair of yellow cards wer
e distributed, one to
Trevor Gee in the 34th minute. The second of the first 45 came moments later, as Hartford's Demario Cameron was written up.
Freshman
Oskar Magnusson sent a corner kick to the far side of Hartford's keeper, Rotem Fadida in the final minute of the first frame. Socas was able to corral Magnusson's pass and struck one past Fadida to record his first collegiate goal. Magnusson's assist marked his third of the season, which leads the Big Green.
Dartmouth took a 2-0 advantage into the break, as the Big Green outshot their nonconference foe 14-2 through 45 minutes of play.
The Big Green picked up right where they left off as the second half began. Senior
Pedro Campos fired a shot, which was saved by Fadida. However, van Schalkwyk put the rebound past the keeper to extend his team's lead to three in the 48th minute.
Dartmouth continued to take shots and create chances throughout the remainder of the contest.
Finn Callahan and
James Wilson fired numerous shots toward the goal but could not extend the Big Green lead to four before time expired.
"I think we had the ball so much," Oshoniyi said. "I thought we created a lot of good chances and I think three goals is good. We need to be able to have a little bit more execution even in the final third to get a few more goals. I'm proud of the boys, proud of the effort and it was a great result."
The Big Green snapped a two-game skid in the all-time series against Hartford with Tuesday's victory. Dartmouth trails in the series 3-4-0 following this matchup at Burnham Field.
Tuesday's win marks the second time the Big Green had three different goal scorers in one match. The first came against Stonehill on September 24th in Dartmouth's 6-0 win at Burnham Field.
