HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women's basketball team battled neck-and-neck with in-state rival New Hampshire and led by as many as five in the fourth quarter, but stumbled down the stretch in a 59-56 loss Sunday afternoon at Leede Arena.
The Big Green, still in search of their first win, dropped to 0-3 and the Wildcats improved to 1-2.
Overcoming a slow start, Dartmouth found itself holding a two-point advantage at halftime. Eventually tied heading into the fourth, the Big Green had the upperhand in the early minutes of the final quarter and looked positioned to pick up their first win after
Grace Niekelski's triple gave Dartmouth a five-point lead with just over five minutes remaining. New Hampshire fought back to take a 57-56 lead with Brooke Kane's free throws with 18 seconds on the clock. The Big Green looked to
Emma Koch in a do-or-die possession, but the senior's attempt to drive for a game-winning bucket was thwarted as New Hampshire's Belen Morales Lopes successfully stepped in to draw a charge. Dartmouth had one more chance in the final seconds after a pair of Wildcat free throws and came close to forcing overtime when
Victoria Page's 3-point runner drew front iron as the buzzer sounded.
Dartmouth owned the boards, outrebounding New Hampshire 48-39, including a 22-10 edge in offensive rebounds. 12 different Dartmouth players grabbed at least one rebound, while
Mekkena Boyd led the team and tied a career-high with eight.
22 offensive rebounds marked Dartmouth's highest total since Jan. 3, 2013, when the Big Green grabbed 25 against Holy Cross.
Niekelski led a balanced scoring contingent with 13 points, going 4-of-11 from the field and 3-of-6 from downtown. Koch and
Olivia Lawlor, along with
Doreen Ariik in her first action of the season, scored eight apiece.
The Wildcats were paced by Avery O'Connor's 15 points. Breezie Williams and Morales Lopes also scored in double figures.
Dartmouth shot just 21 percent from the field and was 0-for-7 beyond the arc in a cold first quarter, allowing New Hampshire to jump out to a 16-8 advantage. The Big Green responded with a strong second quarter, eventually taking a 24-23 lead with Niekelski's basket in the paint. She later drilled a 3-pointer to put Dartmouth ahead, 29-24 in the final minute, but that was answered with Morales Lopes' last-second trey.
Dartmouth had its largest lead, 42-34, midway through the third quarter after another Niekelski 3-pointer.
A seven-point New Hampshire run ensued, capped off by Karolina Andersson's triple, brought the Wildcats back within one. Ariik stopped the bleeding with a mid-range jumper, but New Hampshire once again ended the quarter with a 3-pointer.
The Wildcats reclaimed the lead early in the fourth with Paige Cote's bucket and Dartmouth answered with
Emma Koch's successful and-one opportunity.
Olivia Lawlor's clutch jumper from the corner had the Big Green on top, 50-46, and the lead grew to five after Dartmouth traded a Wildcat bucket for Niekelski's triple. New Hampshire chipped away in a low-scoring finish until claiming the lead, and eventually the game, with O'Connor's free throws.
Dartmouth returns to action Wednesday night, hosting Merrimack at Leede Arena beginning at 6 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Lori McBride and Bob Lipman on the call, and fans will be able to listen to the game via the Dartmouth Athletics website with Justin McIsaac calling the action.
