MONDAY NIGHT HOOPS
Dartmouth welcomes Bryant for the 2022-23 season opener, and just the seventh meeting all-time between the two New England foes.
SEASON OUTLOOK
Dartmouth sets its sights on the 2022-23 campaign after a 3-23 season in Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball
Adrienne Shibles' first year at the helm. The Big Green demonstrated growth down the stretch last season, though, finding a pair of Ivy League wins over the final month of action, including an overtime win at Cornell.
The top four leading scorers all return as
Mia Curtis,
Mekkena Boyd,
Victoria Page and
Carrington Washburn each look to pace what looks to be an improved Big Green offense. Curtis led the team in scoring last season and dropped a career-high 20 points on the road against eventual Ivy League Champion Princeton
Seniors
Karina Mitchell,
Emma Koch and
Kaiyah Corona will serve as captains during the 2022-23 season. Mitchell was able to hone her leadership ability over the summer while completing cadet training in Fort Knox, Kentucky. Senior leadership will be a theme for the Big Green with four seasoned veterans providing plenty of guidance to a talented cast of underclasswomen.
"The energy and leadership have been phenomenal and we're blessed to have four terrific seniors," said Shibles. "They have the team following them and they're completely bought in. They will have a tremendous legacy at Dartmouth. Everyone is focused and determined to make the most of this non-conference part of our season."
WELCOME TO THE WOODS
The Big Green welcome four freshmen: 6-1 forward Olivia Lawlor, 6-3 forward Clare Meyer, 5-9 guard Brooke Hollawell and 5-6 guard Anna Nelson. Also new to the program this year is sophomore transfer Leiya Stuart, who comes to Hanover after beginning her collegiate career at Vermont. Stuart was named the 2018-19 Gatorade Player of the Year in Rhode Island during her impressive high school career at St. George's School. She appeared in 11 games across two seasons with the Catamounts and scored a career-high seven points in their 2021-22 season opener against Merrimack. Assistant coaches Jamie Insel and Victoria Lux are also new to the program, along with director of operations Colleen Corcoran.
THE 2022-23 SLATE
Dartmouth's schedule features some interesting dates ahead of the Jan. 1 Ivy League start date. Dartmouth faces defending Big Ten champion Iowa on the road Wednesday, December 21. That contest serves as a homecoming for senior captain
Emma Koch, who hails from Iowa City. The Big Green head to California shortly before the Iowa matchup to take part in the Long Beach State Classic, which pits Dartmouth against both Long Beach State and UC Irvine. New Year's Day in Ithaca, New York is the setting for Dartmouth's conference opener at Cornell, who Shibles' squad defeated in overtime on the road last season.
CONGRATULATIONS, COACH SHIBLES!
Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball
Adrienne Shibles was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame on Sunday, Oct. 30. Standing as the all-time winningest coach at Bowdoin College with numerous NCAA Tournament appearances to her credit, Shibles was already a member of the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame.
SCOUTING BRYANT
Bryant returns three starters from last season's squad that made a run to the NEC Championship Game with wins over the top two seeds before falling to Mount St. Mary's in the final, capping off a 10-22 campaign. 6-3 center Mariona Planes Fortuny looks to be the go-to player offensively after ranking second on the team last year with 9.4 points per game. Last year, Bryant led the NEC in total assists, but was plauged by turnovers. Only six teams in the nation turned the ball over more frequently than the Bulldogs. Despite the strong finish with an appearance in the conference title game, Bryant suffered a slow start last season, losing each of its first five, including a close 63-60 decision at home against Brown.
The 2022-23 season marks Bryant's first as a member of the America East.
