Dartmouth Erases 20-Point Deficit, but Falls at Boston University, 67-59

Big Green used a 29-8 stretch to turn a 20-point deficit into a one-point lead
BOSTON — Boston University jumped out to a 21-2 lead on Tuesday night, but the Dartmouth men's basketball team responded by scoring 40 of the next 60 points to take a 42-41 second-half lead. However, Boston University broke a late 52-52 tie with an 11-0 run, and the Big Green couldn't recover as they fell on Tuesday evening at Case Gym, 67-59. A balanced offense saw five Dartmouth players score between seven and 11 points. Senior Dame Adelekun led the way with team highs in points (11) and rebounds (8), along with a career-high five blocks.
With the win, the Terriers improve to 7-5. Dartmouth falls to 4-8. Junior Dusan Neskovic added 10 points. While making his first-career start, classmate Jaren Johnson scored nine to tie a career high. Senior Cam Krystkowiak had eight points and junior Izaiah Robinson added seven.
Walter Whyte led Boston University with 18 points.
"I saw a team that wasn't quite ready when we stepped on the court," said Big Green head coach David McLaughlin. "We told them before the game we needed to be ready, all five guys. We just didn't quite have an edge to us and let their pressure get to us."
After initially falling behind 21-2 midway through the first half, the Big Green began chipping away. A 7-0 run, which included 3-pointers from Neskovic and Krystkowiak, got Dartmouth within 21-9 with 8:55 on the first-half clock.
The Terriers scored eight of the first 12 second-half points to extend their lead to 41-29. But Dartmouth had an even bigger answer than its first half, responding with a 13-0 run. Adelekun was a huge spark at both ends of the court. In the first 5:21 of the second half, he posted nine points, four rebounds, four blocks and an assist in an incredible stretch of basketball. Going back to the first half, the Ivy League leader in blocks had all of his career-high five rejections in the span of 10:04 of game action. The effort came one game after posting a career-high four blocks.
"BU is a good team. They're well coached, they're talented and they jumped on us," said McLaughlin. "You can't go down 20 points in a half. You pretty much have to play perfect basketball to get back in that game, and we had a great stretch. The guys played really well and they executed at a really high level. They played with energy for the next 25 minutes. It allowed us to take a lead late in the game.
"I think because we had to use so much energy to get back in, we had a couple wasted possessions towards the end," McLaughlin continued. "BU is an experienced, older group and they were able to put back-to-back possessions together."
For the game, Dartmouth shot 42.9 percent from the floor (24-of-56), including 26.3 percent from 3-point range (5-of-19). Boston University finished at 43.1 percent (25-of-58) and 45.5 percent from behind the arc (10-of-22). The Big Green held a 35-34 edge in rebounds, which included 12 offensive boards.
The Big Green continue their road swing on Friday night when they travel to the University of South Florida to face the Bulls. Gametime is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.

Boston University responded with a Caelan Jones 3-pointer and wouldn't trail the rest of the way. There were multiple ties, however, as freshman Jackson Munro converted a layup then later jumper, to pull Dartmouth even at 50 and 52, respectively, with 6:20 remaining. BU answered by reeling off 11 consecutive points, as three straight Big Green turnovers in that span proved costly.
