BERLIN, Md. — Senior
Mark Turner tied for the low score of the day by carding a 1-under 71 in the second and final round of the Battle at Rum Pointe on Sunday, leading the Dartmouth Big Green men's golf team to a tie for 10th in the 22-team field. Rhode Island posted the best team score for the second straight day to shoot 575 (-1) and win the event by 14 strokes over Harvard.
Starting on the seventh hole in the shotgun start at the 7,001-yard, par-72 Rum Pointe Golf Course, Turner struggled a bit out of the gate with bogeys on eight and 12 to put him at 2-over after six holes. But he started to turn his round around on 13, birdieing the par-5 hole before adding birdies on one and three while parring out on every other hole. With his 3-over 75 yesterday, Turner finished just outside the top 10 in a tie for 11th with a 2-over 146.
Another senior,
Charles Petrie, matched his score from the first round, sinking three birdies and 12 pars to card a 150 (+6) for the tournament, good for a tie for 27th in the 120-player field.
Freshman
Justin Lee sank the most birdies today for Dartmouth with four but struggled with consistency as he concluded the day with a 5-over 77. That left him two strokes behind Petrie in a tie for 43rd and 8-over par.
Also scoring for Dartmouth was junior
Eli Thrasher, who had one birdie and 12 pars in a 7-over 79 round. One bad hole dropped him back four strokes, and he ended up tied for 81st at 13-over.
Turner's older brother, fifth-year
James Turner, played as an individual and left the course with a 2-over 74 today and equaled Petrie in a tie for 27th. Sophomore
Alex Gu also competed for the Big Green, carding an 8-over 80 with a pair of birdies today.
Dartmouth will return to the links next weekend for the Irish Creek Intercollegiate, co-hosted by Charlotte and Davidson. The first two rounds will commence on Saturday with the third and final round on Sunday at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, North Carolina.
