PRINCETON, N.J. — Senior
Brooke Plonka twirled a three-hit shutout in the second game of an Ivy League doubleheader at Princeton on Saturday afternoon, helping Dartmouth (6-20, 2-3 Ivy) salvage a twin bill split with the league-leading Tigers (12-11, 6-2 Ivy).
Â
Game 1: Princeton 8, Dartmouth 5
In the first game, five different players scored the five runs.
Billie McFadyen had three hits and two RBIs, while
Maddie Katona had two hits of her own.
Â
Dartmouth jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning.
Leila Hennessy drove in both
Maria Angelino and
Jenna Brown with a single to left center. Later in the inning, McFadyen hit a triple to right center, scoring Hennessy and Katona.
Â
Princeton then responded by scoring four runs in the fourth to tie the game. The inning began with a solo home run hit by Adrienne Chang. Grace Jackson later drew a walk, bringing in another run. A single up the middle by Serena Starks brought home the next two runs.Â
Â
The Tigers then pulled ahead in bottom of the fifth with three more runs. After a sacrifice fly by Lauren Sablone brought in a run, Ali Blanchard hit a two-run homer to make it a 7-4 lead for Princeton. The Tigers would get an additional run in the sixth on a sacrifice grounder by Chang.
Â
Dartmouth tried to make a comeback in the seventh inning when
Kate Farren drove in McFadyen with a sacrifice grounder. However, the rally ultimately came up short for the Big Green.
Â
Game 2: Dartmouth 2, Princeton 0
The second game of the doubleheader did not feature as much offense as the first game. Both teams combined for six hits in the first six innings, with neither team scoring a run.Â
Â
Dartmouth broke through in the seventh. With the bases loaded, Katona walked to score
Alaana Panu. Later in the inning, McFadyen reached on a fielding error to drive in
Izzy Kam.
Â
The two runs Dartmouth scored was all starting pitcher Plonka needed. She threw her third straight complete game and her second shutout of the season. She also struck out eight batters in the win.
Â
Dartmouth returns to play its third and final game against Princeton on Sunday, April 3 at 12:30 p.m.
