PURCHASE, N.Y. — The Dartmouth men's golf team shaved seven strokes off their first-round score in Saturday's second round of the Ivy League Championship, but the Big Green dropped back into fifth place with a 605 (+37) as Columbia surged from fifth into third with the low round (285, +1) on the day.
Graduate
Jason Liu and senior
Mark Turner both finished the day with a 2-over 73 on the 7,023-yard, par-71 course at the Century Country Club. That score allowed the former to remain among the top 10 with a 5-over 147, tying him for seventh, with one round still to come on Sunday.
Yale maintained its 10-stroke advantage at the top of the leaderboard with a 5-over 289 today, matching second-place Harvard and leaving the Bulldogs 13-over (581) for the first two rounds. Three of the top four on the individual leaderboard are from Yale with Ben Carpenter owning a one-stroke lead at 1-over par (72-71—143).
A day after no one broke par, Liu threatened to as he played the front nine at 2-under with three birdies. His back nine began roughly, however, with a double bogey on 10, and though he parred seven of the last eight holes, he suffered another double on 13 to conclude the day with his 73 and 5-over for the tournament.
Turner, on the other hand, started slowly at 3-over through four holes. But with nine pars and three birdies on the next dozen holes, the senior was at even par for the round with two to play. Bogies on 17 and 18, however, dropped him back into a tie for 19th at 11-over (80-73—153).
Just ahead of Turner in the standings is freshman
Eli Kimche, who matched Liu yesterday for the team's low round. Today, the rookie stumbled early, then picked up birdies on a pair of par-5 holes at eight and 11. By the end of the round, Kimche had produced a 78 (+7), dropping him back into a tie for 17th at 10-over par (152), a stroke ahead of Turner.
Senior
Charles Petrie shaved three strokes from his first-round score with a 4-over 75 today thanks to 11 pars and a pair of birdies. Coupled with his 78 (+7) from yesterday, Petrie is tied with Turner for 19th place.
Turner's older brother, fifth-year senior
James Turner, matched his first-round score and is tied for 29th (80-80—160, +18).
The third and final round will get underway at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday with the pairing of Penn and Cornell. Dartmouth will tee off with Princeton at 8:20 a.m., while the top three teams of Yale, Harvard and Columbia get started at 9:10 a.m.
