Jason Liu capped his Big Green career with a 3-over 74 in the final round of the Ivy League Men's Golf Championship, climbing three spots on the individual leaderboard to tie for fourth as Dartmouth tied for the best round of the day with a 15-over 299. The Big Green wrapped up the three-round tournament in fifth place at 52-over par (904).
Only six golfers posted a better round than Liu today, two of whom were his teammates. Senior
Mark Turner carded a 1-over 72 and senior
Charles Petrie a 2-over 73 as both concluded the championship among the top 15.
Yale took home the title despite tying for the worst score of the day with a 22-over 306. But Harvard, which began the day 10 strokes back in second place, also carded a 306, allowing Columbia to overtake the Crimson for second place, five strokes off the pace. Fourth-place Princeton finished five strokes ahead of Dartmouth with an 899, while Penn was eight strokes behind the Big Green in sixth (912) and Cornell finished up with a 931 (+79).
Liu began the day on the 7,023-yard, par-71 course at the Century Country Club with three consecutive pars before sinking his first of three birdies on the par-3 fourth. When he reached the turn, he was at 1-over par, then suffered a double bogey on 10. Liu quickly regrouped with four straight pars, then added another birdie on the 533-yard, par-5 15th only to have another double bogey on 16. But he ended the tournament with a birdie on 18 to move into a tie for fourth with a 74-73-74—221 (+8).
Much like Liu, Turner began his day well with four straight pars before hiccups on five and six with bogeys. But with birdies on the 477-yard, par-5 eighth and the 152-yard, par-3 13th, he got back to even par. A bogey on 14 was followed by another birdie on 15, and one final bogey on 17 left him with the second-best score of the day, leaving him with a final total of 80-73-72—225 (+12) to tie for 12th.
Petrie began the day tied with Turner and remained right on his heels, even moving ahead of him with an early birdie on the 388-yard, par-4 second hole. But three bogeys in a four-hole span brought him back even with Turner through seven holes. Like Turner, he birdied eight and 13, bogeyed 14 and birdied 15, but a bogey on 16 was the difference and dropped him one stroke behind his teammate in a tie for 14th (78-75-73—226, +13).
The other golfer to contribute to the Big Green's total today was fifth-year senior
James Turner — older brother of Mark — carding a 9-over 80 for the third straight day, finishing in 31st place. Freshman
Eli Kimche concluded the championship in 25th with a 74-78-82—234 (+21).
Yale's Ben Carpenter began the day with a one-stroke lead at 1-over par and remained in the lead despite carding a 4-over 75 today to finish up with a 218 (+5), two strokes ahead of Penn's Mark Haghani and Columbia's D.J. Francey. The trio of golfers that were one stroke back all shot a 7-over 78 to tie for sixth, one stroke behind Liu and Columbia's Nathan Han.
