Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2024 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers" presented by the Norwich Inn.
This installment focuses on
Alex Gu of men's golf. A native of Darien, Conn., Gu competed in eight events last year and helped Dartmouth to a second-place finish at the Columbia Fall Invitational.
DartmouthSports.com: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Alex Gu: I have been taking three classes this term; The Economics of Financial Intermediaries and Market, Integrated Design: Engineering, Architecture and Building Technology and American Music: Roots and Revolutionaries. I have also spent time hanging out with friends by going to the river and playing golf at nearby courses to prepare for the upcoming fall season. I also have been working out with my teammates.
DS: What is your favorite place on campus?
AG: The River, for sure. It's a great place to rewind and spend time away from classes to relax and have fun swimming and tubing.
DS: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
AG: For me, it was the team culture and environment of the school. I think it is important to have teammates that care for you and push you to get the best out of you every day and that is vital to winning a championship.
DS: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
AG: I would probably swap with
Mark Turner. He's super talented on the golf course and is an even better person off the course as he is always in a good mood to lighten your day.
DS: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
AG: If I could play a different sport it would have to be baseball. I've been to a few games and just watching the team spirit and support they give each other would be cool to be part of.
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life?
AG: For me, it was my brother who pushed me into playing golf. He's the reason why I started and why I still love the game to this day. I don't know what I would be doing if he didn't get me into golf.
DS: What has been your best on-field memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
AG: Hitting my first tee shot of my college career. My freshman year was canceled due to COVID and it was great to finally get an opportunity to play in a college event last September. To be able to hit the fairway on the first hole and play well in my first round was really amazing.
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
AG: Hanover is very similar to where I grew up. I grew up in a town about the same size, and one thing about Hanover is how tight the community is. Everyone is very friendly to one another and shares a bond of friendship with each other.
DS: What's the app you use most on your phone?
AG: Instagram. I like to keep up on golf events and other sporting events going on in the world, so a lot of my feed is sports.
DS: What show do you binge watch?
AG: I like watching movies more than TV shows. I really like Shawshank Redemption and Django Unchained.
DS: Do you have a nickname on your team? Who gave it to you and why?
AG: My teammates typically call me by my last name, Gu. But now a lot of them are calling me Gu-Man. Every one of them starts referring to me as Gu as it's really simple and catchy, I guess.
DS: You step outside tomorrow and find a lottery ticket that ends up winning $10 million (after taxes). What would you do with the money?
AG: I would give it back to my parents for their continuous support in my life as I believe it is more important to give back to those who supported you along the way.
DS: What are your post-Dartmouth plans?
AG: I plan on pursuing a career in finance and will continue to improve my golf game to play in higher-level tournaments in the future.
DS: What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
AG: Don't get upset at failure. There will always be times when you fail at a job or event in life. It is more important to learn from the failures to make sure they don't happen again.
DS: If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?
AG: I would go back to my hometown to catch up with all of my friends and play regional golf events.
