Preseason Football Practice Has Arrived

The two-time defending Ivy champs are back on the gridiron to prepare to defend their title
HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth football team opened its preseason camp on Blackman Field yesterday, the first of the preseason practices and two scrimmages the Big Green will conduct before opening their 2022 schedule on Sept. 17 against Valparaiso at Memorial Field. The co-favorite in the preseason poll, Dartmouth is aiming to win its third consecutive Ivy League crown and extend its league-leading total of conference titles to 21.
Buddy Teevens, the Robert L. Blackman Head Football Coach and winningest coach in program history, managed to revamp his squad last year and earn a share of the championship despite returning just four starters. This year, he has quite a bit of experience returning at the offensive skill positions but just three starters back on the defensive side of the ball.
Senior quarterback and tri-captain Nick Howard, a first-team All-Ivy selection last year, will run the offense. But instead of serving primarily as a rusher as he did last year, amassing 787 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground while sharing time with Dartmouth's all-time leader in passing accuracy (Derek Kyler), Howard will get the opportunity to show off his arm as well. He will have plenty of targets at which to throw with each of the top six receivers back in the fold, led by junior Paxton Scott (46 catches, 505 yards, 4 TDs). And fifth-year senior Zack Bair and senior Noah Roper combined for 825 yards and three scores last year, which will allow Teevens to keep all of his veterans' legs fresh.
The unknown for the offense, however, is up front on the line with just one starter returning in fifth-year senior Griff Lehman. Junior Nicholas Schwitzgebel saw signification action off the bench last year while splitting time at right guard, but the rest of the candidates are largely untested in game action. How that unit comes together will dictate the Big Green's success in putting points on the board after averaging over 30 points a game each of the last three seasons.
The defense will rely on a talented group on the line to put pressure in the backfield, led by senior tri-captain Shane Cokes, an All-Ivy Second Team choice a year ago. The linebacking corps, which has been a staple of the nationally relevant defense for the past decade, may lack experience overall but has the athletes in place, such as senior sackmaster Marques White, ready to step up and keep the tradition going. And the secondary has the other tricaptain in safety Quinten Arello, a quiet but steady presence, to navigate pass coverages.
