DartmouthSports.com: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
Izzy Kam: Dartmouth was the best fit for me on so many levels. Obviously the academics, but I was also drawn to the small, tight-knit community surrounded by beautiful scenery with so many activities available to students. The softball team was also very welcoming and helpful with all of my questions. I was impressed and excited about how much Dartmouth values family and community service.
Â
DS: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
IK: There are several teammates I would swap places with, however the one I would most like to swap with is
Maddie Katona. She is always kind and genuinely cares about those around her. She's a great listener, not quick to judge, and she is always there to give a helping hand. Maddie is also extremely dedicated on the field.
Â
DS: Outside of sports, what are you most passionate about?
IK: I am most passionate about community service. I am a lifetime Girl Scout member (I joined when I was 6 years old) and our troop was always finding ways to serve our community. I traveled a lot for softball, and I ended each tournament by purchasing supplies and food, assembling them into gift bags, and handing them out at local homeless shelters. I'm most excited about serving the community during the holidays because I enjoy making the holidays special for those who are less fortunate. Connecting with your community and paying it forward is such a humbling experience, and I've met wonderful people with interesting stories along the way.
Â
DS: What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
IK: I would give myself three rules to live by: you are the only person who can define your self-worth, always challenge yourself to be better and remember that it will take a major failure in order for you to truly succeed in life.
Â
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
IK: Hanover is very different from where I grew up. Burbank has a dense population, great weather, and you can go up the mountains in the morning to watch the sunrise and then drive to the beach to watch the sunset. Hanover is beautiful with nature, little towns tucked between the woods and friendly people who love to engage in conversation.
Â
DS: Do you have a nickname on your team? Who gave it to you and why?
IK: My nickname on the softball team is Izzyfizzy and it was given to me by an assistant coach after I told him about my first email account that I created in 5
th grade.
Â
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life?
IK: My sister has been and continues to be the greatest influence on my life. We have completely different personalities, yet we are both very competitive. Our family raised us to become well-rounded individuals through teaching us the importance of our family's five As: academics, athletics, arts, attitude and ambition.
Â
DS: You step outside tomorrow morning and find a lottery ticket that ends up winning $10 million (after taxes). What would you do with the money?
IK: I would invest at least half, secure a house for myself, pay for my sister's med school, buy a retirement home for my parents, travel with family and donate to my favorite charities. I will always be thankful for the opportunities my parents have given me and I would love to give back to them by making their retirement comfortable.
