ALBANY, N.Y. — Senior
David Alino made the most of a last-minute penalty kick, as his first goal of the season helped the Dartmouth men's soccer team to a 1-1 draw with UAlbany. The Big Green remain undefeated on the road after Saturday's tilt against the Great Danes.
The Big Green and Great Danes were evenly matched throughout the contest, as both squads recorded five shots on goal. Dartmouth's
Costi Christodoulou and UAlbany's Safique Wilson both made four saves for their respective teams at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium.
Alino recorded two shots on target in 46 minutes of action, while
Kristian Feed,
Andrew Ellis and
Trevor Gee all tested Wilson. Dartmouth and UAlbany split possession 50-50, emphasizing how evenly matched the teams were on Saturday night.
"It was definitely tough when we were down, but we had all guys fighting for one goal," Alino said following the match. "It was almost bound to happen. The fact that we fought for 90 minutes and never gave up; we ended up getting something out of it. That means the most to us. We're going continue to grow and hopefully get the next one against UConn on Tuesday."
Christodoulou stood tall in the opening moments of the match as the South Africa native stopped a shot from UAlbany's Max Wilhelm just over a minute into the opening half. This would be the only save he would have to make in the first 45 minutes of play, as the Big Green defense blocked six shots in the first half.
Shots from Alino and Feed were the first tests Wilson faced from the Big Green, but both chances were turned away. Dartmouth and UAlbany finished the first half scoreless.
The Great Danes struck first in the 78th minute, as Christodoulou was beat by a shot from UAlbany's Andrew Weiner. Feed attempted to respond moments later, but his shot went wide of the goal.
Freshman
Oskar Magnusson was fouled in the 18-yard box, giving the Big Green an opportunity to leave New York with a tie. Alino, who was subbed back on in the 84th minute, was called upon to tie the contest in the final minute of play for a penalty kick opportunity. The Stratford, Connecticut native powered his penalty past Wilson on the bottom-left side of the net to score the third goal of his career and equalize the contest.
"I'm really proud of the boys to continue to battle and find a way to get a point on the road," Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer said. "We still have a lot of work to do, but the resilience this group showed was excellent."
The Big Green's record against UAlbany in the all-time series now sits at 4-1-1. Dartmouth is now 1-1-1 against the Great Danes in Albany.
Dartmouth returns to Burnham Field this Tuesday, Sept. 20 for an evening tilt against the UConn Huskies at 7 p.m.
Notes: Alino's goal is the third of his collegiate career.
The Big Green and Great Danes played to a draw for the first time in the all-time series, which dates back to 2013.
Dartmouth had four freshmen in tonight's starting lineup,
Oskar Magnusson,
James Wilson,
Sam Fenton and
Sebastian Manon, the most in a match this season.
