HANOVER, N.H. — David Alino scored four consecutive goals, which propelled Dartmouth to a 6-0 victory over Stonehill on Saturday afternoon. The Big Green aced their final test prior to Ivy League competition at home.
Dartmouth held a 1-0 lead at the half, following a goal from Alino in the opening moments of the match. The Big Green offense erupted in the second half, as a trio of goals from Alino and goals from
Fallou Ndiaye and
George Altirs sealed the win.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Costi Christodoulou recorded three saves for the Big Green in 76 minutes of play, while
Dylan Buchanan saw his first action in goal this season in the second half. Dartmouth peppered Stonehill with shots throughout the match, ending the contest with 24, 13 of which were on goal.
"I'm just so happy for the guys," Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer said. "We've struggled to score goals, so to get six was a testament to them and their mindset. We were able to get guys off and rest them a little bit, which was good. I think we made it a little harder on ourselves in the first half. But, the second half, I think we took our chances well and got the win at home."
Alino was looking for chances early in the match, as a shot in the third minute missed the target. Moments later, a strong individual effort from Alino led to a chance that he buried past Stonehill's Ryan Coutu to give Dartmouth the 1-0 lead.
The Big Green continued to apply pressure for the remainder of the opening 45 minutes but were unable to extend their lead.
Sebastian Manon made a strong defensive play in front of the Dartmouth goal, as the freshman made a save on an excellent chance for Stonehill to tie the match in the 56th minute.
Manon's efforts on defense we rewarded shortly after, as
Oskar Magnusson made a long pass directly to Alino, who did not waste the opportunity to give the Big Green a 2-0 lead in the 59th minute of action.
The goals continued to pour for Alino and the Big Green, as moments later he put another past Coutu to complete the hat trick. He wasn't done, as a beautiful feed from
Kristian Feed just over a minute later in the 65th minute set Alino up for a header and his fourth goal of the day."
"I think it definitely lifted the team up," Alino said of his performance. "Especially since we were only up by one and playing so well, we knew we needed to get more goals. Scoring four was not something that I planned on doing. But I'm just so thankful, mainly to the team, to boost our confidence."
Dartmouth continued to create chances, which paid off in the 77th minute, as Ndiaye put another goal past Stonehill's keeper to score the first goal of his collegiate career. As time winded down, Altirs scored his first goal as a member of Dartmouth's team, which was assisted by
Pedro Campos.
The Big Green's victory over Stonehill marks the most goals the program has scored in a game since Sept. 21, 2019, against Niagara. The 6-0 final is also the largest shutout for Dartmouth since Sept. 4, 2009, against St. Peter's.
Dartmouth opens the all-time series against Stonehill with an emphatic victory at home. The Big Green picked up their first win at Burnham Field this season and improve to 1-1-0 against opponents from the Northeast Conference.
The Big Green open Ivy League competition next Saturday, Oct. 1, against the defending champion Princeton Tigers. Kickoff is slated for 4:30 p.m. and can be streamed on ESPN+ and internationally on Stretch Internet.
