HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's soccer team fell to Brown, 4-1, in their Ivy League opener on Saturday evening at Burnham Field.
Dartmouth moves to 5-3-1, 0-1-0 while Brown improves to 6-2-1, 1-0-0.
Danielle Burke was the lone goal scorer for the Big Green as she scored her first collegiate goal.
Brittany Raphino led the way for Brown with one goal and two assists. Miya Grant-Clavijo and Kira Maguire each scored a goal for the Bears.
"Through the first 45 minutes we were doing a lot of things that we wanted to do in the game and I thought the team was effective at times," said Stacy and Branca Family Head Coach of Women's Soccer. "It's tough when you give up an early goal at the start of the second half."
Both teams had a shot on goal in the opening few minutes, with
Hailey Rorick hitting a left-footed strike from outside the box in the seventh minute that was saved by Brown goalkeeper Clare Gagne. Shortly after, the Bears got on the board when a pass from Raphino inside the Dartmouth box took an unfortunate deflection into the back of the net.
Brown added to their lead shortly into the second half in the 48
th minute. They later tallied two more to bring their lead to four.
As time started to wane down, the Big Green pushed numbers forward to get on the board. Dartmouth found the back of the net in the 87
th minute. A cross from
Relly Ladner from the right wing into the box made its way out of bounds off of Brown for a Big Green corner kick.
Sonoma Adams stepped up to take the corner, playing the ball in towards the penalty spot. A header from the Brown defense fell for Ladner, who struck the ball out of the air back towards goal, finding
Ella Russ. Russ' initial shot was saved but the rebound fell perfectly for Burke to calmly shoot the ball out of the air with the inside of her left foot for her first career goal.
Rainey finished by saying "I felt like we responded as the half went along. Against a team like Brown, we have to play a complete 90 minutes and I think we have all the tools to do that and now we just need to have a great week of practice as we prepare for Princeton."
Dartmouth hits the road as they to New Jersey next weekend to square off with Princeton on Saturday, October 1. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will be available to stream on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet.
