THIS WEEKEND
Dartmouth welcomes four nonconference foes for the 2022 Dartmouth Invitational. The Big Green look to defend their tournament crown after going undefeated through three matches in last year's iteration with wins over New Hampshire, Holy Cross and UConn. Â
Â
STRONG START
Dartmouth started the 2022 campaign at the UCI Invitational with a four-set win over three-time defending Northeast Conference champion Sacred Heart, avenging a four-set loss just a season ago. The following day, the Big Green dominated Holy Cross to the tune of a .363 hitting percentage in a speedy three-set triumph. Dartmouth closed the tournament with a three-set loss to a tough UC Irvine team that went undefeated through the invitational slate. Dartmouth currently ranks third in the nation in digs per set with 18.60.
Emma Engstrom is the catalyst in that category with a team-best 5.10 digs per set – she currently ranks 23rd in the country individually.
Â
HOME COOKING
For Dartmouth volleyball, there's no place like home. The Big Green went 8-2 at Leede Arena last year, which marked the team's best home record since 2011. With a five-match win streak at home late in the 2021 campaign, homecourt advantage was a big part of Dartmouth's highest finish in the Ivy League since 2015.
Â
BALANCED ATTACK
Through three matches, the Big Green have featured three different kills leaders. The first of which was
Ellie Blain, who notched 19 kills in the four-set opener against Sacred Heart. Freshman
Kauany Gutz led the category against Holy Cross with seven, and fellow rookie
Ava Roberts followed suit with eight against UC Irvine.
Â
SCOUTING SIENA
The Saints are winless on the season, but were able to pick up a set against defending Ivy League champion Brown on Saturday. Sara Wagner paced Siena in that match with 12 kills, while Grace Halley notched 15 digs and Meghan Johnsson served up 16 assists. The Saints come off a 7-23 2021 campaign that saw an eighth-place finish in the MAAC.
Â
SCOUTING LEHIGH
Lehigh has cruised to a 6-1 record, most recently defeating Saint Peter's in three sets Wednesday night. Megan Schulte has been the star offensively as she leads the team with 4.04 kills per set. The Mountainhawks currently rank 13th in the nation in aces per set (2.35) and seventh in blocks per set (3.00).
Â
SCOUTING MERRIMACK
The Warriors come off a three-set loss to Holy Cross, who the Big Green had little trouble defeating Saturday in California. Merrimack previously earned a four-set win over Hartford, a fellow participant in the Dartmouth Invitational. A season-opening three-set win against Saint Peter's marked the Warriors' first victory since the 2019 season.
Â
SCOUTING HARTFORD
The Hawks are still looking for their first win after falling in three sets to undefeated Boston College Wednesday night. Hartford managed to keep the third set close, but eventually fell 25-22. Uzezi Ijoma and Greta De Gasper are the two most prominent attackers and both notched nine kills against the Eagles.
Â
WHAT'S AHEAD
The Big Green are back on the road to compete in the Seton Hall Invitational. They open the two-day festivities against NJIT Friday, Sept. 16 at 4:30 p.m.
