NEW YORK – The Dartmouth women's volleyball team had Columbia on the ropes, winning the first two sets on the road but the hosts stormed back to take the final three and claim a 3-2 Ivy League victory (20-25, 16-25, 25-20, 25-13, 15-9) inside Levien Gymnasium on Saturday, Oct. 10.
The Big Green were sharp out of the gate. Trailing 4-2 in the opening set, Dartmouth reeled off a 6-0 run, with Sloan Balsley serving the final five points, to grab an 8-4 lead. Elle McCreery later served five straight points, including two aces, to stretch the margin to 17-9. Columbia answered with a 6-0 run to pull within 21-18, but Maddie LaFata put down the set-clinching kill to seal a 25-20 win. Dartmouth then took the second set, 25-16, while hitting .241.
The match turned in the third. The teams traded eight ties and four lead changes before Columbia used a 5-0 run to flip a 10-9 Dartmouth edge into a 14-10 lead it never relinquished. The Big Green hit .375 in the set but could not close the gap, falling 25-20.
Columbia seized control in the fourth, opening with a 5-0 run after Dartmouth's 2-0 start. The Big Green managed just five kills against six errors in the set and fell, 25-13. Dartmouth jumped in front 2-0 again in the decisive fifth, but Columbia countered with a 4-0 run. The Big Green pulled even at 4-4, yet the hosts led from 4-5 on and finished the set hitting .533.
Riley Imamura paced Dartmouth with 13 kills, adding nine digs and three blocks. LaFata hit .526 on 11 kills with just one error on 19 attempts. Jaida Cekic and Zori Brown each put down nine kills, and Clementine Tebbe finished with eight blocks (two solo, six assisted). Sophia Gagnepain posted 18 assists and 18 digs, and Audrey Kalorin dished out 16 assists.
Dartmouth held the edge in hitting percentage (.206 to .197) and in blocking (13.5 to 5.0).Â
