HANOVER, N.H. — Cold shooting in the fourth quarter kept the Dartmouth women's basketball team from its first Ivy League win as Brown came away with a 66-58 victory Saturday evening at Leede Arena.
Mia Curtis tied a career-high with 20 points and Dartmouth's offense erupted with 27 in the third quarter of a back-and-forth conference tilt, but
Victoria Page's 3-pointer was all the offense the Big Green could muster in the fourth. Brown pulled away in the final minutes to improve to 8-7 (1-2), while Dartmouth dropped to 2-15 (0-3).
Curtis, who led Dartmouth in scoring for a second consecutive game, was 6-of-15 from the field and 4-of-8 from deep on her way to a game-high scoring effort.
Clare Meyer also tied a career-high with 10 points, all coming in the third quarter.
Mekkena Boyd filled the stat sheet with seven points, four steals, and tied a team-high with seven boards. Kyla Jones and Grace Arnolie poured in 19 and 16 points respectively for the Bears.
The Big Green grabbed 50 rebounds, which marked their highest single-game total since 51 in a win against Yale on Feb. 16, 2018. Dartmouth now has two games this season with at least 20 offensive boards.
The Big Green faced a 35-28 deficit at halftime, but battled back to tie the game by the 6:05 mark of the third.
Grace Niekelski's jumper at the buzzer, which gave Dartmouth a 55-53 lead heading into the fourth, represented the last points they would score until the 2:18 mark of the final quarter. The Big Green were 1-of-15 from the field during a slump that persisted for the entirety of the fourth.
Brown led wire-to-wire in the first quarter after Charlotte Jewell opened the scoring with a four-point play. The Bears led by as many as five early on before Boyd brought Dartmouth back within one with a 3-pointer. Curtis knocked down a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the first to bring the score to 16-14, in favor of Brown.
The Big Green had a 22-20 edge after one of Curtis' four treys midway through the second, but Brown would end up with a seven-point lead going into halftime, the largest for either team at the time. Back-to-back buckets by Jones lifted the visitors back on top and later it was Arnolie who converted a fastbreak opportunity to put Brown ahead by seven, capping a speedy 6-0 run.
Curtis' 3-pointer set the tone for a Dartmouth-owned third quarter. The Big Green shot better than 60 percent to outscore Brown 27-18 and hold a slight edge entering the fourth. Meyer, who was 4-of-4 from the field and 2-of-2 at the line, was a go-to force in the paint during that stretch. Curtis knocked down three triples, including one to give the Big Green a 41-38 advantage with just over five minutes remaining in the quarter.
Jones connected from downtown to tie the game with three left in the third and
Karina Mitchell answered the call for Dartmouth, grabbing an offensive rebound and putback while drawing a foul. After trading buckets, Niekelski's jumper off an offensive board put the Big Green back on top heading into the final 10 minutes.
Brown claimed the lead at the 7:58 mark with Jones' layup, and that marked the beginning of a lengthy drought for both sides. The next field goal came from Ada Anamekwe with 4:15 remaining. Trailing by seven, Page sunk a 3-pointer in hopes of re-energizing the Big Green offense, but cold shooting continued as Brown was able to grind out a 66-58 triumph for its first conference victory.
Dartmouth will visit Penn on Saturday, Jan. 14. The game is set for 2 p.m. at The Palestra and all the action will be streamed live on ESPN+.
