Browne Scores Twice, but Dartmouth Drops Slim 3-2 Final to UNH

One day after her first-career shutout, goalkeeper Ava Carlson makes a career-high 10 saves
HANOVER, N.H. — In the first quarter, senior Lila Browne scored twice in 48 seconds to give the Dartmouth field hockey team a 2-1 lead, which would stand until midway through the third quarter, but visiting New Hampshire scored twice in the span of 4:01 to take a 3-2 lead, which proved to be the final on Sunday afternoon at Chase Field. Facing a team that entered the week ranked No. 26 nationally in RPI, the Big Green controlled play for long stretches, but ultimately fell short of their third straight win.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 8-3. Dartmouth falls to 4-4 ahead of a weekend trip to Philadelphia next weekend to face Penn and La Salle.
"Coming into today, we knew New Hampshire was going to be a very strong team," said Dartmouth head coach Mark Egner. "From an RPI perspective, they're in the top 30 and they've been doing very well this year. So we knew it was going to be a difficult game. We came out and started very strong. Unfortunately, we let UNH back into the game and that created some momentum for them, which we struggled to shut down.
"We need to learn how to deal with close games that are going to be a little back and forth."
One day after picking up the program's first Ivy League win since 2018, the Big Green fell into an early 1-0 hold just 2:15 into Sunday's contest. But the momentum quickly changed when Browne buried Dartmouth's first two shot attempts of the game.
The first came at the 8:56 mark via a beautiful reverse shot near the top of the circle that beat UNH goalkeeper Jemma Woods. Junior Gabriella Braceras assisted the goal. Less than a minute later, fifth year Meg Barnes found Browne in front to quickly put the Big Green ahead.
Dartmouth has now tallied multiple goals in five of the eight games so far this season.
"We've done a really good job finding each other in behind defenders," said Browne. "I also think we've improved a lot in being scrappy in the circle, getting rebounds, deflections and capitalizing on people who are playing the ball in."
Action picked up in the second quarter with the Wildcats holding a 7-6 edge in shots, but each side made five saves. One sequence in the final two minutes saw two stops, the first from sophomore Olivia Galitos (her third defensive save of the weekend), with Carlson denying the second chance.
The Big Green tried to come back in the fourth, creating two penalty corners and firing three shots, but only one was on goal as UNH held on for the 3-2 victory.
Final shots were 23-12 in favor of the Wildcats while New Hampshire held a 7-6 edge in penalty corners. Carlson's 10 saves came across Woods who made six.
The Big Green now hit the road for four straight, beginning next weekend with an Ivy League showdown at Penn on Saturday before facing La Salle on Sunday. Both games are set for 12 p.m.
