LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — The Dartmouth men's golf team entered the third and final round of the Columbia Autumn Invitational in second place and held firm to its standing with a 7-over 291, wrapping up the tournament with an 858 (+6). The Big Green were the only team to have two players finish the three rounds under par in senior
Alex Gu (-3) and sophomore
Aaron Zhang (-1).
Host Columbia posted the low round of the day at 1-under 283 to win its tournament by nine strokes over Dartmouth, while Colgate claimed third 11 strokes behind the Big Green at 17-over par (869).
Both Gu and Zhang sank four birdies in the final round, but Gu matched freshman
Tyler Brand for the Big Green's low round of the day with a 1-over 72. Gu was especially strong over the back nine of the par-71 course at Lake Placid Golf Club with three birdies and six pars and claimed third in the individual standings. Brand, meanwhile, had three birdies of his own along with a dozen pars to post his best round of the weekend, tying for 30th at 10-over par (223).
Zhang was right behind Gu in the final standings, tying for fourth with his 1-over 214 as he paired eight pars with his four birdies in the final round for a 2-over 73. Also contributing to the Dartmouth tally today was sophomore
Fin Szafnauer who produced a 3-over 74 thanks to a trio of birdies.
Although
Justin Lee concluded his three rounds with a 76 (+5), he still managed to finish in the top 25, tying for 24th with an 8-over 221.
Sacred Heart's Marcus Lim wrapped up medalist honors on the strength of his 8-under 63 in the opening round, then shooting par each of the final two rounds to beat out Columbia's Nathan Han, by two strokes.
The Big Green will conclude the fall portion of their schedule in two weeks when they play at the Elon Phoenix Invitational on Oct. 16-17 at Alamance Country Club in Burlington, North Carolina.
Notes: The 858 is the fourth-lowest three-round total for Dartmouth ever … its best total came last year at this very same tournament with a 1-under 851.
