HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's soccer team battled for all 90 minutes, but fell to No. 16 Vermont, 2-1, on Tuesday night at Burnham Field in their non-conference finale. The game was tied 1-1 at the half, but a late goal from the Catamounts proved to be the difference.
Dartmouth moves to 4-6-2 overall while Vermont improves to 10-2-2.
"That's a great team, they are one of the best teams in the country right now," said Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer
Bo Oshoniyi. "Our guys battled tonight and I was really proud of that. I think we lost our legs a little bit those last 10-15 minutes and conceded the game-winner. But all-in-all, I'm proud of the effort from the boys and we just want to make sure we get our legs back for Saturday."
It was a physical contest between the Big Green and the Catamounts. Vermont scored the go-ahead goal in the 78
th minute of play. After moving the ball down into the Dartmouth box, Yaniv Bazini struck a shot off the left post and still maintained possession. Quick ball movement from the Catamounts led to a cross from Nick Lockermann that found the head of Max Murray. Dartmouth goalkeeper
Costi Christodoulou got a hand on the shot but was unable to prevent it from going in, giving Vermont a 2-1 lead.
The Catamounts took the lead in the ninth minute after Bazini curled in an effort from outside the box into the top right corner.
The Big Green tied things up midway through the first half. Making his first appearance of the season,
Trevor Gee tallied the equalizer.
James Wilson, possessing the ball just shy of midfield, played a long ball down the right wing to
Phineas Callahan. Callahan won the foot race against the Vermont defender, setting up the chance to hit a cross into the box. Callahan's low driven cross found Gee at the penalty spot, who struck it first time into the top right corner.
"We battled for 90 minutes and it's not the result we want, but I'm proud of the boys for staying the game," said Gee. "Hopefully we can finish games like that off in the future."
Dartmouth remains at home Saturday to play Cornell on homecoming weekend. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Burnham Field and the game will be available to stream nationally on ESPN+ and internationally on Stretch Internet.
