PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Dartmouth women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 defeat to No. 14 Brown in Ivy League action on Saturday afternoon in Providence in the team's season finale.
With Penn defeating Cornell, 2-1, earlier in the day, that eliminated Dartmouth from postseason contention and clinching a spot in the Ivy League Women's Soccer Tournament.
The two teams played to a scoreless opening 45 minutes, with the Big Green having the edge in shots on goal, 2-1.
Carly Retterer tallied the first shot on target of the game inside the first three minutes, but Brown goalkeeper Clare Gagne made the stop. Retterer had another shot later in the period, but the effort was against stopped by Gagne.
The Bears scored their first goal of the night in the 51
st minute. Sheyenne Allen played a short corner to Audrey Lam, who immediately played it back to Allen. Allen then took a touch and struck a shot from outside the box to the back post that found its way into the goal to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
Brown later scored in the 77
th minute to take a 2-0 lead. Lam's initial shot was saved by
Emily Hardy, but Lam was able to follow up on the rebound and score.
Dartmouth ends the season with a 7-3-5 overall record and 2-3-2 record in the Ivy League. Brown continues on to the tournament with a 11-1-2 overall and a perfect 7-0-0 conference record.
The Big Green end a season which saw them set new program records and standards. Dartmouth went 5-0-3 in non-conference play, the first time they have gone unbeaten in non-league play in a season. The 7-0-3 start to the season is the longest unbeaten start to a season in program history. The Big Green began the Ivy slate 2-0 for the first time since 2009.
