HANOVER, N.H. — The Ivy League office announced its weekly football awards this afternoon, and Dartmouth's Owen Zalc was selected as the Rookie of the Week for the third time this season. He is just the third Big Green player to earn the rookie honor three times in a season.
A 5-10, 160-pound place kicker from Cary, North Carolina, Zalc converted three field goals to account for the entirety of Dartmouth's points in a 17-9 loss at 23rd-ranked Harvard on Saturday. His first field goal came late in the first quarter from 37 yards, closing the gap to 7-3. He added a 47-yarder — matching his career long set the previous week — to make it a one-point game in the third quarter, and his 35-yard boot with 15 seconds to play kept the Big Green's slim hopes of a comeback alive.
This is the second time this season that Zalc has knocked three field goals through the uprights, matching his performance against Lehigh on Sept. 23. He is the first Dartmouth kicker with two such games in a season (or even a career) in 20 years.
Receiving mention on the honor roll were fifth-year linebacker Marques White who had three sacks in his season debut and sophomore safety Sean Williams who picked off two passes in the first half.
Dartmouth returns to Hanover to host Ivy League co-leader Princeton (4-3, 3-1 Ivy) at Memorial Field on Friday at 7 p.m., needing a victory to keep their title hopes alive. The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU, and a free audio broadcast featuring Brett Franklin and Wayne Young '72 also will be available through the official site of Dartmouth Athletics, DartmouthSports.com. To purchase tickets, visit the Dartmouth Ticket Office website or call at 603-646-2466.
Notes: Zalc is third among FCS kickers with 1.71 field goals per game this season … other Big Green players to receive the Rookie of the Week at least three times were Craig Morton '89 four times in 1986 and Shawn Abuhoff '12 three in 2008 … the last Dartmouth kicker with two games with three field goals was Tyler Lavin '05 in 2003.
