HANOVER, N.H. — Picking up its third straight victory after last weekend's wins over Cornell and Columbia, the Dartmouth volleyball team notched a 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-12) triumph over Penn on Friday evening at Leede Arena.
The Big Green improved to 6-7 and 3-1 in the Ivy League, while Penn dropped to 2-13 and 0-5 in the Ancient Eight.
Dartmouth took some time to find its footing in the first set, but only trailed a few times in both of the next two en route to a business-like sweep.
Ellie Blain led Dartmouth with eight kills and
Amelia Gibbs, who ranks among the Ivy League's best in hitting percentage, was another catalyst with seven kills at a .400 clip, along with four blocks.
Makenzie Arent led the Big Green in both assists (20) and digs (13). Her fellow setter
Karen Murphy is now just two assists away from 1,000 on her career after recording 10 this evening.
Trailing 9-4 in the first set, Dartmouth put together a 4-0 run powered by a couple
Maddie LaFata kills and eventually grabbed an 11-10 lead with a Quaker error. Tied 17-17, the Big Green took control with a few key points, including a tie-breaking kill by
Kauany Gutz. Penn hung around and used back-to-back kills to climb within one while facing set point, but Blain came through with the winner in the form of her fifth kill of the set.
In the second set, it was Dartmouth grabbing the early lead and Penn in the position to play from behind. The Big Green had a 10-6 edge, but succumbed to a 4-0 Quaker run to see their lead vanish. Dartmouth didn't trail again after landing three consecutive kills (Gutz, Blain and
Bomi Ogunlari) to claim a 14-11 lead. Penn threatened late once again, using another 4-0 run to tie the game at 21-all, but a Gibbs ace and another clutch Blain kill were difference makers for Dartmouth.
An lengthy Big Green run in the third set was the dagger for Penn. Already leading 10-9, Dartmouth went for eight straight points, which included three of Gibbs' four blocks on the night, to grab a commanding 18-9 lead.
Piper Stevens also went for three blocks in the third set, helping the Big Green more than double up the Quakers to secure the sweep.
Dartmouth meets one of its fellow 2022 Ivy League Tournament participants for the first time this season on Saturday when Princeton visits at 5 p.m. The match will be streamed on ESPN+ with Brandon Bojarsky on the call and live stats will be available through DartmouthSports.com.
