NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Playing a man down for the final 65 minutes of play, the Dartmouth men's soccer team fell to Yale, 2-0, in Ivy League action on Saturday evening at Reese Stadium.
Dartmouth moves to 4-5-1 and 2-1-0 in the Ivy League while Yale improves to 5-3-2 and 1-0-2 in conference play.
"Tough game. I think the red card really changed the momentum of the game," said Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer
Bo Oshoniyi. "It's a learning lesson for us. We've been able to learn through winning in the Ivy League so far, and now we'll have to learn through a loss."
It was a back-and-forth game throughout the early portion of the first half, with both sides conceding several fouls. The Big Green picked up two yellow cards in the first 23:39 of the game, before receiving a straight red card after a challenge in middle of the field in the 25
th minute, forcing them to play a man down for the remainder of the contest.
Yale scored its first goal of the night in the 39
th minute. The Bulldogs earned a free kick just outside the corner of the Dartmouth box after a handball called against the Big Green. Max Rogers took the free kick and was able to get his shot past goalkeeper
Costi Christodoulou into the top corner of the goal.
The Bulldogs added to the lead with 15 minutes remaining in the contest. Yasin Aly got the ball down near the edge of the Dartmouth six-yard box, forcing Christodoulou off the line to cut down the angle. Aly's shot struck the right hand of Christodoulou, but the momentum still sent the ball over the line and into the net.
"It was disappointing to come out and receive a red card early in the first half and have to battle with 10 guys the rest of the game," said junior defender
Andrew Ellis. "I was proud of the way the guys battled in the second half, especially being on the road and the conditions."
Dartmouth is back in action next Friday, Oct. 13 with a trip to New York to take on Columbia. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be available to stream nationally on ESPN+ and internationally on Stretch Internet.
