HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women's basketball team challenged a tough Siena squad in a 56-49 defeat in Sunday afternoon's home opener at Leede Arena.
The Big Green stand at 0-2 on the young 2023-24 season after the loss and the Saints improved to 2-0.
Dartmouth has now outrebounded its opponent twice in as many games this season after grabbing 46 boards to Siena's 44. First-years
Nina Minicozzi and
Cate MacDonald led the way on the glass with 10 rebounds each as the Big Green boasted two double-digit rebounders in a game for the first time since the 2016-17 season. Minicozzi added 10 points for a double-double, Dartmouth's first since the 2021-22 campaign.
"We were tough and showed resilience," said
Linda Cimino, Dartmouth's Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach. "We never let it get too far away from us, and our team competed and got good shots. I'm proud of their effort against a team like Siena, one of the top teams in the MAAC. We need to keep working hard and competing."
Siena was led by Ahniysha Jackson and Valencia Fontenelle-Posson with 12 points each.
Victoria Page was Dartmouth's leading scorer for a second straight game with 11, one of three Big Green players to knock down multiple 3-pointers. Siena's Elisa Mevius, who scored 21 in a season-opening win over Binghamton, was held to 11 points, but did manage a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Big Green had their first lead since the opening quarter following
Clare Meyer's layup at the 7:31 mark of the third. Siena responded to the 30-29 deficit with a quick 8-2 run before Minicozzi evened the score with five straight points to tie the game at 37-37 midway through the quarter. Alden Yergey's triple on the other end turned the tide and Dartmouth wouldn't regain the lead.
Both teams combined for just 14 points and shot worse than 25 percent in a defensive-minded fourth. It was nearly three minutes into the final quarter before Meyer scored the first bucket for either team, looking to regain some momentum for the hosts, but Siena used a London Gamble 3-pointer to once again quell a potential Big Green run. A
Mia Curtis trey, which cut the Saints' lead to five with just under five minutes remaining, ended up being Dartmouth's last field goal.
Page scored six of her 11 in the first quarter, but it wasn't enough to keep Siena from grabbing a 13-11 advantage entering the second.
Mekkena Boyd, who was 2-of-2 from downtown on the day, knocked down both of her triples in the second quarter to help Dartmouth continue to hang with Siena and trail by just three (26-23) at the half.
The Big Green are back in action at Leede Arena in just two days, hosting Division III Keene State on Tuesday, Nov. 14. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Bob Lipman and Lori McBride on the call, and an audio broadcast will also be available with Brandon Bojarsky calling the action. Single-game and season tickets are available for purchase through the Dartmouth Athletics ticket office.
