CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The No. 2-seeded Dartmouth women's rugby team had hopes for a third straight NIRA Division I Championship going into Saturday's title match with No. 1 Harvard, but suffered a 20-12 loss at Mignone Field.
Dartmouth finished its 2023 campaign with a 6-3 record and Harvard capped off an undefeated season (9-0) with its second divisional championship in program history.
Cindy Taulava and
Anjali Pant accounted for the Big Green's two tries in the loss, while Lennox London scored two of Harvard's three tries. Taulava's try and
Abbey Savin's subsequent conversion gave Dartmouth its only lead of the match at 7-5 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half. A halftime lead would elude the Big Green, however, as Harvard entered the locker room with a 10-7 advantage.
The Crimson capitalized on
Hehea Pulotu's early yellow card and struck first with London's try 13 minutes into the contest. Taulava had the answer as the first-year powered her way to pay dirt for her ninth try of the season.
Harvard responded with Brogan Mior's try that came with four minutes remaining in the half, providing the hosts from Cambridge with a momentum boost before halftime. London scored her second try of the match in the opening minutes of the second half, helping Harvard grab a 10-point lead. It was a stalemate for most of the later portion of the game until Harvard's kick for points in the final minutes.
The Big Green battled until the finish as Pant scored the final try of the match with zeroes on the clock.
Dartmouth will be back in action during the spring of 2024 for the 7s season.
