HANOVER, N.H. — Stats Perform announced the finalists for its Jerry Rice Award, given to the national freshman of the year in Division I FCS college football, and Dartmouth first-year Owen Zalc was among the 22 players listed.
A 5-10, 160-pound place kicker from Cary, North Carolina, Zalc broke Dartmouth and Ivy League records in his first season in Hanover. He set a new standard for field goals in a season by a Big Green kicker, converting 17 in 21 attempts, surpassing the old mark of 15 set 33 years ago. Of those 17 field goals, 14 came in Ivy League play, besting the previous conference mark of 13 set in 2008.
Three times Zalc booted three field goals in a game, including the game-winner in overtime at Penn to lift Dartmouth to a 23-20 victory in its Ivy League opener. He also provided the winning kick from 47 yards out — a season long and his fourth conversion from that distance — with 1:29 remaining in the 23-21 triumph over Princeton. His 1.7 field goals per game are the third most in the FCS, and his 81.0 percent accuracy ranks 17th nationally as well. Combined with his 25-of-26 PAT conversions, Zalc led the Ivy League with 76 points and set the program's scoring record for a freshman, while his 7.6 points per game ranks 25th nationally.
Dartmouth (6-4, 5-2 Ivy) finished the season tied atop the Ivy League standings with Harvard and Yale to earn a share of its 21st conference crown, most in Ancient Eight history.
