HANOVER, N.H. — The Ivy League office revealed its finalists for the Bushnell Cup, given to the top offensive and defensive football players in the conference, and Dartmouth's Charles Looes was announced as one of the two finalists for the defensive award. The Big Green have had a finalist in seven of the past nine seasons, six of which have come from the defensive side of the ball.
A 6-3, 275-pound defensive lineman from Hillsdale, New Jersey, Looes tied for the conference lead with 7.5 sacks, earning a spot on the All-Ivy League First Team as well as the New England Football Writers Division I All-New England Team. The fifth-year senior came on strong toward the end of the season with six sacks in the final three games, including four against Princeton to tie a Dartmouth single-game record. He also had a total of 43 tackles, 9.5 going for a loss, while hurrying the quarterback five times, batting down three passes at the line, forcing two fumbles and recovering one, plus blocked a field goal attempt in a two-point victory over Princeton. In Ancient Eight play only, Looes led the loop with 6.0 sacks and ranked fourth with 8.0 tackles for a loss.
The other finalist for the defensive award is Penn defensive lineman Joey Slackman. On the offensive side, Brown wide receiver Wes Rockett and Yale quarterback Nolan Grooms are the finalists.
For the 13th time, the National Football Foundation & College Football Hall of Fame (NFF) is partnering with the Ivy League to co-host the Asa S. Bushnell Cup Presentation. The four finalists will travel to New York City for the press conference, announcement and reception, on Monday, Dec. 11, at the famed New York Athletic Club. The event is set to begin at 12:30 p.m. EST with the doors opening at noon.
Presented annually since 1970, The Asa S. Bushnell Cup honors its namesake, a 1921 Princeton alumnus and the commissioner of the Eastern College Athletic Conference from 1938 to 1970. The Bushnell Cup is awarded by a vote of the Ivy League's eight head football coaches to the players who display outstanding qualities of leadership, competitive spirit, contribution to the team and accomplishments on the field.

From 1970 to 2010, the Bushnell Cup recognized an Ivy League Player of the Year (or co-Players of the Year if there was a tie in voting). Beginning with the 2010 season, the award was presented as part of the festivities surrounding the NFF Annual Awards Dinner with four finalists named a week prior to the presentation. In 2011 season, the award began recognizing Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, honoring each as a recipient of the Bushnell Cup. Two offensive finalists and two defensive finalists are named, with the Players of the Year unveiled at the presentation.
Notes: Since the Ivy League began announcing finalists for the awards in 2010, Dartmouth has been represented in New York nine times with four winners — RB Nick Schwieger in 2010, LB Folarin Orimolade in 2016, CB Isiah Swann in 2018 and LB Jack Traynor in 2019 … other finalists were Schwieger in 2011, QB Dalyn Williams in 2014, LB Will McNamara in 2015 and QB Derek Kyler in 2021 … the Big Green have had nine players win the Bushnell Cup since its inception in 1970, starting with QB Jim Chasey in the inaugural year, followed by the late Buddy Teevens (1978), Shon Page (1990), Al Rosier (1991) and Jay Fiedler (1992) before the four in the 2010s.
