HANOVER, N.H. — Fifth-year senior Charles Looes is receiving plenty of recognition for his performance in Dartmouth's 23-21 victory over Princeton on Friday night, receiving not only the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week award, but the weekly Gold Helmet Award from the New England Football Writers Association. Additionally, he received honorable mention from Stats Perform for its FCS National Defensive Player of the Week honor.
Looes terrorized the Tigers in the nationally televised game, tying a Big Green program record with four sacks, two of which caused fumbles and one that he recovered himself. His first two sacks came on consecutive plays on Princeton's second drive of the evening, and his forced fumble on the second one led to a field goal that gave Dartmouth an early 10-0 lead. On the first play of the fourth quarter, the fifth-year senior from Hillsdale, New Jersey, registered his fourth sack jarring the ball loose again, which he then covered up to end the Tiger drive.
With Princeton holding a 21-20 lead and about five minutes to play, Looes blocked a 47-yard field goal attempt that initially was returned by a teammate for a touchdown only to have it called back due to an illegal block in the back penalty on the return. The Big Green still was able to convert that effort into points, thanks to a 47-yard field goal of their own to lift the Green to the victory over the Ivy League co-leader.
A pair of Dartmouth players earned spots on the weekly honor roll. Sophomore safety Sean Williams returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown and the game's first points, tied for the team lead with nine tackles, returned the opening kickoff 38 yards and three punts for 30 more, plus had a 69-yard touchdown on a blocked field goal called back due to a penalty during his return. Meanwhile, quarterback Jackson Proctor came off the bench in the second half to complete 9-of-12 passes for 86 yards and guide the offense to a touchdown on his first drive and into position for the two field goals that made the difference in the game.
Dartmouth will play its final home game next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. when Cornell (3-5, 2-3 Ivy) invades Hanover looking to spoil the Big Green's chances of earning a share of the Ivy League crown. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Bob Lipman and Matt Corsetti calling the action, and a free audio broadcast featuring Brett Franklin and Wayne Young '72 also will be available through the official site of Dartmouth Athletics, DartmouthSports.com. Notes: Looes is the first Dartmouth player to receive the Gold Helmet Award since Derek Kyler won it for a second time during the 2021 campaign following the season finale … Dartmouth has had 18 players earn the Gold Helmet Award over the past 14 years … Kyler wasn't the only Big Green player to garner the Gold Helmet in 2021; cornerback Isaiah Johnson took home the honor on the strength of a 73-yard pick-six against Princeton to help Dartmouth defeat the 16th-ranked Tigers … the last Big Green defender to win the Ancient Eight defensive award was linebacker Jalen Mackie in September of 2021.
