HANOVER, N.H. — The Ivy League office announced its weekly football awards this afternoon, and not only did Dartmouth fifth-year senior defensive end Charles Looes receive the Defensive Player of the Week, but his first-year teammate, Owen Zalc, was chosen as the Special Teams Player of the Week. This is his fourth weekly award of the season having been the recipient of the rookie honor three times this season.
A 5-10, 160-pound place kicker from Cary, North Carolina, Zalc provided the difference in the Big Green's 23-21 victory over Princeton on Friday with his third field goal of the night from 47 yards out with just 1:29 remaining in the contest. His first field goal was a 39-yard boot in the first quarter that gave Dartmouth a 10-0 lead, and he added a 38-yard conversion late in the third quarter to close the gap to a single point at 21-20. The three field goals boosted his season total to 15, tying the Big Green single-season record and vaulting him into the FCS national lead in field goals per game (1.88).
This is the third time this season that Zalc has knocked three field goals through the uprights, matching his performance against Lehigh on Sept. 23 and again last week at Harvard. He is the first Dartmouth kicker with three such games in a season in 33 years.
Dartmouth will play its final home game next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. when Cornell (3-5, 2-3 Ivy) invades Hanover looking to spoil Senior Day and the Big Green's chances of earning a share of the Ivy League crown. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Bob Lipman and Matt Corsetti calling the action, and a free audio broadcast featuring Brett Franklin and Wayne Young '72 also will be available through the official site of Dartmouth Athletics, DartmouthSports.com. To purchase tickets, visit the Dartmouth Ticket Office website or call at 603-646-2466.
Notes: The only kicker in Dartmouth's history with three field goals in three separate games in one season is Dennis Durkin '93 in his sophomore season (1990) … Durkin and Tyler Lavin '05 own the Big Green record with four such games in a career.
