The Big Green Tame the Tigers at Home
The Princeton Tigers came roaring into Hanover this past weekend and were sent back home on the losing end of two scores. Fifth-year senior Charles Looes had four sacks in a 23-21 Big Green football victory. On the women's rugby pitch Cassie Depner had three tries, helping Dartmouth rack up an impressive win with their highest point total since becoming a varsity squad.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named The Richards Group Athletes of the week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Charles Looes, 5th, Hillsdale, N.J., DL, Football
Looes terrorized the Princeton Tigers in a nationally televised game, tying a Big Green program record with four sacks, two of which caused fumbles and one that he recovered himself. His first two sacks came on consecutive plays on Princeton's second drive of the evening, and his forced fumble on the second one led to a field goal that gave Dartmouth an early 10-0 lead. On the first play of the fourth quarter, the fifth-year senior from Hillsdale, New Jersey, registered his fourth sack jarring the ball loose again, which he then covered up to end the Tiger drive.
With Princeton holding a 21-20 lead and about five minutes to play, Looes blocked a 47-yard field goal attempt that initially was returned by a teammate for a touchdown only to have it called back due to an illegal block in the back penalty on the return.
In addition to DartmouthSports.com honors Looes was named the Ivy Defensive Player of the Week as well as earning the Gold Helmet Award.
Cassie Depner, Jr., Moon Township, Pa., Lock, Women's Rugby
Cassie Depner doubled her career try total with a hat trick in Dartmouth's record-breaking 115-7 road win over Princeton. Depner, one of two players with three tries in the match, helped the Big Green rack up their highest point total and second largest margin of victory since gaining varsity status in 2015. The dominant performance allowed Dartmouth to secure the No. 2 seed in the NIRA Playoffs and earn the right to host Quinnipiac in the semifinal on Saturday.
