HANOVER, N.H. — Powered by Darcie Lappan's hat trick, No. 5 Clarkson stormed past the Dartmouth women's hockey team by a final score of 5-0 at Thompson Arena on Friday evening.
The Big Green dropped to 2-10-1 on the season and 1-8-1 in ECAC play, while the Golden Knights remained unbeaten and improved to 17-0-2 and 6-0-1 in conference action.
Despite first-year netminder
Eleanor Rogers clearing the quarter century mark in saves for the eighth time this season, Clarkson jumped on top early with a pair of first-period power play goals and didn't look back, eventually netting its fifth tally early in the third. In addition to Lappan's hat trick, the Golden Knights received goals from Anne Cherkowski and Sena Catterall. Lappan notched an assist to complement her three goals.
Shots on goal sided with Clarkson, 31-21, as Julia Minotti earned the shutout for the Golden Knights, who currently lead Division I in scoring defense.
Cherkowski's power play goal opened the scoring nearly nine minutes into the first period, and less than 10 minutes later, Clarkson had another with Lappan's first of three tallies. Early in the second, it was again Lappan that lit the lamp and handed the visitors a commanding 3-0 lead. The lead extended to 4-0 before the midway point of the period as Catterall found the back of the net. Lappan's final goal came less than two minutes into the final period and Dartmouth held Clarkson in check for the remainder of the contest as Rogers recorded 11 of her 26 saves throughout the third.
The early portion of the game was penalty-filled with five different skaters heading to the box between the first period and the opening minutes of the second, but both sides steered clear of the sin bin after the game's final penalty expired midway through the second period.
