HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women's hockey team trailed 3-0 midway through the opening period, but battled back to give No. 8 St. Lawrence all it could handle in a 6-5 loss on Saturday afternoon at Thompson Arena.
The Big Green dropped to 2-11-1 and 1-9-1 in the ECAC, while the Saints improved to 13-6-0 and 7-1-0 in conference play. Saturday marked the end of a challenging weekend that brought consecutive ranked opponents to Hanover.
Despite goals from five different Big Green skaters, an Abby Hustler hat trick and three straight St. Lawrence tallies to open the game spelled trouble for the Big Green. Resilience was on display, though, as the lead was cut to 3-2 by the end of the first period and it remained a one-goal game entering the third. Back-to-back Saints goals in the final period were backbreakers, but the Big Green were able to fight back with two of their own in the final two minutes, including
Cally Dixon's tally with a fraction of a second remaining.
Hustler's three goals were complemented by two from Julia Gosling and one from Anna Segedi. Goseling and Mae Batherson both dished out three assists.
Kenzie Bachelor,
Mia Buonarosa and
Izee Powell had two assists apiece for the Big Green.
Eleanor Rogers was good for 30 saves in Dartmouth's net and Emma-Sofia Nordström made 22 for the Saints.
With 11 minutes still remaining in the first period, St. Lawrence had already scored its third goal of the contest and the Big Green looked destined for another lopsided ECAC loss, coming off a 5-0 defeat at the hands of No. 5 Clarkson. That was before
Hamilton Doster and
Tiffany Hill delivered consecutive goals to put Dartmouth right back in the game.
Clinging to a 3-2 lead heading into the second, the Saints responded quickly with Gosling's second goal, but Dartmouth had the answer less than three minutes later with
Shae Messner's tally to trim the lead once again to one.
Hustler's third goal of the game was the start of the third period that the Big Green couldn't afford. Segedi's power play goal, which proved to be the game-winner, looked like the dagger until Dartmouth raised Saints' eyebrows with two quick goals in the last two minutes during a 5-on-3 opportunity with the goalie pulled. The first came from
Laura Fuoco with just over a minute remaining and Dixon's goal left just enough time for the puck to drop on the game-ending faceoff.
Dartmouth's seven-game homestand concludes on Wednesday, Dec. 6 as Post comes to Thompson Arena for a 3 p.m. puck drop. Fans can watch the game live on ESPN+ and an audio broadcast, along with live stats, will be available on DartmouthSports.com.
