HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women's basketball team was unable to put together the necessary late run in Monday afternoon's 57-38 loss to UC Riverside at Leede Arena.
The Big Green moved to 2-4 on the season, while the Highlanders of the Big West improved to 4-3.
Clare Meyer led the Big Green offensively with a season-best 13 points, going 5-of-8 from the field.
Doreen Ariik once again had the team-high in rebounding, this time grabbing seven. UC Riverside's Makayla Jackson went 4-of-5 from deep to tally a game-high 18 points. Jordan Webster and Matehya Bryant matched Ariik with seven boards.
The Big Green only trailed by one at the end of the first quarter, but found themselves facing a 13-point deficit by halftime. Still within reach early in the fourth, Dartmouth wasn't able to summon a much-needed run as UC Riverside made key shots and continued to pull away.
Meyer had seven of Dartmouth's first nine points as the Big Green held a 9-5 edge midway through the opening quarter. UC Riverside had its first lead when Jaden Sanderson and Jordyn Marshall had back-to-back buckets, but Dartmouth was again on top after
Leiya Stuart knocked down a step-back 3-pointer, her first triple of the season, to give Dartmouth a 12-11 lead. UC Riverside's Esther Matarranz scored the final bucket of the first to give the Highlanders the lead and they wouldn't trail again.
Dartmouth was held to six points in the second, while UC Riverside enjoyed its strongest quarter of the game (18) to begin to pull away. The Highlanders had their first double-digit advantage at the 4:01 mark of the second, and although Ariik answered with two of her eight points, a Webster 3-pointer on the other end provided UC Riverside an 11-point lead. Bryant and Jordan Marshall helped the Highlanders score the last four points of the half and the Big Green would be unable to come within 10 points for the remainder of the game.
UC Riverside had its largest lead, 42-21, in the third after one of Jackson's four treys.
Carrington Washburn and
Mekkena Boyd 3-pointers allowed Dartmouth to end the quarter on a 6-0 run, but a 15-point deficit entering the fourth proved insurmountable. Two different
Mia Curtis buckets, including a 3-pointer at the 8:10 mark of the fourth, had Dartmouth within 13, but Webster answered both instances for the Highlanders with a three of her own to quell the late run the Big Green were desperate to spark.
