Men's Basketball and Women's Hockey take the honors this week
It was "Dame" day in Leede Arena this past weekend while freshman Elle Sullivan was making her presence known on the road. The Big Green men's basketball team won a hard-fought battle with the Columbia Lions, in large part due to the efforts of Dame Adelekun. The 6-8 forward tied a Big Green Leede arena record with 41 points in the, 83-73 victory. Over in Ithaca, N.Y. women's hockey was facing the number 10 team in the country; Cornell. In her first start in goal since December 10, Sullivan stopped 31 of 32 shots to backstop the Green to a huge, 5-1, win over the Big Red.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named The Richards Group Athletes of the week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Elle Sullivan, Fr., Shrewsbury, Mass., G, Women's Hockey
Elle Sullivan led the Big Green in goal to a victory against then-No. 10 Cornell last Saturday. The freshman stopped 31 of 32 shots she faced, as Dartmouth secured its first win over a ranked opponent on the road since February 14, 2015.
Sullivan made crucial stops to help Dartmouth build a sizeable lead against the Big Red and did not concede a goal through the first two periods. The Shrewsbury, Massachusetts native recorded her first ECAC Hockey victory and second overall win of her career.
Dame Adelekun, Sr., Gastonia, N.C., F, Men's Basketball
Dame Adelekun enjoyed a history effort in Saturday's win over Columbia, posting 41 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and two assists. The 41 points tied a Leede Arena record and were the most a Dartmouth player has ever scored in the arena.
Adelekun drew 14 of the Lions' 25 fouls on the afternoon while shooting 14-of-18 from the floor and 13-of-19 from the free throw line. A second-half dunk followed by block was named the #4 Play of the Day on SportsCenter. Adelekun was also named Ivy League Player of the Week on Monday.
