Hitting the slopes and the hardcourt with success this week
Freshman Ava Thurston is enjoying the natural beauty and outdoors of Northern New England, leading the Big Green to two podium placements over the weekend for the women's Nordic squad. On the hardcourt indoors, senior Dame Adelekun is continuing his success at keeping the men's basketball team in the hunt for a spot in the Ivy Tournament.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named The Richards Group Athletes of the week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Ava Thurston, Fr., Waterbury, Vt. Nordic Skiing
Freshman Ava Thurston, who competed in the FIS Junior World Cross Country Skiing Championships in late January in Whistler, British Columbia, demonstrated her talent and technique at the Harvard Carnival this past weekend, helping Dartmouth win its first carnival in nearly four years. The rookie cruised to victory in the women's 10K classic on Friday at Dublin XC, winning the race by more than 35 seconds for her first collegiate gold and third podium out of just four races. On Saturday, she was the anchor leg for the Big Green's 3x5K classic relay team, providing the fastest time during the final loop to help the trio reach the podium in third place. Dartmouth edged out Vermont by a slim 13 points on Winter Carnival weekend.
Dame Adelekun, Sr., Gastonia, N.C., F, Men's Basketball
Dame Adelekun was stellar in Saturday's 83-76 win over first-place Princeton, scoring 25 points while adding five rebounds, two assists, a steal and two blocks. He shot 10-of-14 from the floor, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range. With the score tied at 42, Adelekun scored five straight points to give Dartmouth a 47-42 lead, putting the Big Green up for good. In Ivy League games, Adelekun is the only player in the league to stand in the top five in scoring and rebounding and top 10 in assists.
