PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Coming just shy of its first Ivy League win, the Dartmouth women's basketball team dropped an 82-76 decision to Brown at Pizzitola Sports Center on Friday evening.
Despite a hot start that saw the Big Green lead the majority of the first half, Brown earned the season sweep as Dartmouth's record fell to 2-20 (0-8). The Bears improved to 9-11 (2-6).
Victoria Page dropped a team-high 23 points and connected on 4-of-9 from deep.
Clare Meyer followed with a career-high 17.
Mekkena Boyd filled the stat sheet with a career-high 12 rebounds and five steals. Brown's Isabella Mauricio poured in a game-high 27 points, while Kyla Jones earned a 17-point double-double.
The Big Green shot better than 50 percent from the field in the opening quarter on their way to a 25-18 advantage. Page sunk a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to provide an exclamation point on the stanza, in which Dartmouth was 3-of-6 from deep.
Grace Niekelski scored six of the team's first 10 points as the Big Green held an early 10-5 edge. Brown tied the game at 12-12 at the 2:47 mark with Jones' layup and Dartmouth answered with a Page triple, the first of two straight for the Big Green with
Mia Curtis following suit with just over two minutes remaining. Giving the visitors their largest lead, 20-12, Page sank another jumper before the Bears quickly cut the lead in half. Page's late-quarter heroics had the Big Green on top by seven entering the second.
Roles were reversed in the second quarter as Brown shot 71.4 percent from the field to Dartmouth's 25 percent. The Bears held their first lead of the game after Isabella Mauricio's 3-pointer at the 6:27 mark of the second and although Dartmouth was able to briefly reclaim the lead, the Bears entered halftime with a 42-36 edge. With the Big Green leading 36-34 thanks to
Leiya Stuart's bucket, the Bears made an 8-0 run to end the half.
Dartmouth was back on top with Page's 3-pointer at the 7:11 mark of the third. Brown responded with a triple of its own on the other end and Page, who connected on four or more from deep for a third time this season, knocked down her second straight to give her team a 50-49 edge. That was the Big Green's last lead of the night, however, as Brown hit key shots down the stretch – one of those being a Mauricio triple at the 2:40 mark of the third to break a 55-55 deadlock. Boyd's steal with an and-one helped Dartmouth regain some momentum and tie the game at 58-58. Buckets from Jones and Gianna Aiello gave Brown the four-point edge leading into the final 10 minutes.
With Brown having led by as many as eight in the fourth, Dartmouth gave itself a chance for a first Ivy League victory after coming within four points with 1:25 remaining. Boyd came up with one of her five steals and
Karina Mitchell finished with a layup to bring the score to 76-72, forcing a Brown timeout. The Big Green defense came up with a key stop on the next possession, but a miss on the offensive end allowed Brown to reclaim a six-point edge with a pair of free throws as Dartmouth was forced to foul.
Dartmouth travels to Yale on Saturday, Feb. 4. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. and the game will be aired on NESN along with ESPN+.
