STARKVILLE, Miss. — The Dartmouth softball team suffered a loss to Murray State at The Snowman: Alex Wilcox Tournament Saturday. The Big Green battled the Racers in a low-scoring battle, falling by a score of 2-1.
Â
Sophomore pitcher
Rachel McCarroll shined against the Wildcats, pitching a complete game, allowing just three hits. She recorded six strikeouts, keeping Dartmouth within striking distance throughout the contest.
Â
Kelly Beaupre recorded Dartmouth's lone RBI of the game, as she drew a walk with the bases loaded in the sixth inning.
Alaana Panu was the only player from either team to record multiple hits, as she registered a pair of singles for the Big Green.
Â
How it happened:
Panu, batting second for the Big Green in the top of the first, hit a single to right center to open the contest. The Big Green were unable to bring her home, as Murray State closed the door with a flyout and a strikeout.
Â
An RBI single from Gracie Osbron in the bottom of the inning gave the Racers a 1-0 lead early in the contest. Both teams were held scoreless in the second inning, and Dartmouth went three up, three down in the top of the third.
Â
In the bottom of the third frame, Murray State capitalized on a throwing error from the Big Green, as Adison Hicks reached second base. Hicks went on to steal third and was driven home by Lily Fischer to extend the Racers' lead to two.
Â
The Big Green were unable to draw closer to Murray State during the fourth and fifth innings, failing to record a hit during this span. McCarroll and Dartmouth's defense buckled down, allowing just one hit in the fifth inning.
Â
Jenna Brown recorded a single to lead off the sixth inning, and a single from Panu placed runners on first and second.
Mary Beth Cahalan drew a walk to load the bases moments later. Beaupre showed patience at the plate, drawing a walk to bring Brown home and trim the deficit to just one.
Â
Murray State escaped the top of the sixth with a one-run lead, as Bre Haislip recorded a strikeout to close the frame. McCarroll gave Dartmouth a chance to close the gap, as she struck out two batters and forced a foul out to close the bottom of the sixth.
Â
Leila Hennessy was brought to second on a dropped fly ball, and a groundout from Brown placed the tying run on third. Murray State closed the door on Dartmouth's rally, as a flyout sealed the win for the Racers.
Â
Dartmouth fell to 3-5 on the year, while Murray State improved to 11-6.
Â
Note: Dartmouth's second game of Saturday against Abilene Christian was declared a no-contest.
