The 800m was the highlight for these athletes at HEPS
It was a battle of the 800's at the Ivy track championship this past weekend. The result were gold medals for two Dartmouth athletes. Sophomore DJ Matusz won on the men's side while senior Julia Fenerty added two golds to her haul with a win in the 800m as well as anchoring the 4x800m relay team to victory.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named The Richards Group Athletes of the week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
DJ Matusz, So., Scarsdale, N.Y., MD, Men's Track and Field
DJ Matusz of the Dartmouth men's track and field team won the 800m race on Sunday at the Ivy League Championships. Matusz turned on the jets in the final 100m of the race to move into first and claim the gold medal. He is the first Big Green champion in the outdoor 800m race since Jeff Gillooly '90 in 1990.
Julia Fenerty, Sr., Franklin, Mass., MD, Women's Track and Field
Julia Fenerty claimed two gold medals at the Ivy League Championships on Sunday. Fenerty set a new Ivy meet record in the 800m race with a time of 2:03.81, also breaking the program record. Later in the meet, Fenerty anchored the 4x800m relay winning team, the same group that won the event during the indoor championships.
