HANOVER, N.H. — Phil Steele revealed its preseason All-Ivy League Football Teams with a total of 12 Dartmouth players on the three squads, headlined by free safety Quinten Arello, linebacker Macklin Ayers and long snapper Josh Greene on the first team. Only the defending champion, Yale, had more players listed (17).
Arello, a 6-1, 210-pound fifth-year senior and one of four Big Green captains for the 2023 season, earned All-Ivy Second Team honors in 2022 as well as a spot on the Division I All-New England Football Team. The native of Kansas City, Missouri, recorded 53 tackles last fall, intercepted a pass, forced a fumble and broke up three passes as the leader of the Big Green secondary. He has played in all 30 games during his career, picking off a pass in each of his first three campaigns to go with 90 a total of tackles.
A 6-3, 230-pound senior from Elizabethville, Pennsylvania, Ayers led the Ivy League in tackles per game (10.0) in 2022 while topping the team in stops in each of the first four contests with a career-high 16 against Yale. Although an injury caused the Academic All-District performer to miss a pair of contests in the middle of the season, he returned to contribute 20 stops to the final three games, including an even 10 at Cornell.
Greene has been the most accomplished long snapper in the Ivy League over the last two seasons. The 5-11, 230-pound senior from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, was pinpoint accurate on all of his snaps throughout the 10 games, a big part of the Big Green not having a single punt blocked all year. An Academic All-District selection along with Ayers, Greene was also consistently one of the first men down the field on punt coverages, recording one tackle and recovering a fumble as well.
Dartmouth players on the second team include junior running back Q Jones from Fountain, Colorado (second on the squad in rushing and third in receptions in 2022), fifth-year defensive end Charles Looes from Hillsdale, New Jersey (42 tackles, 5.0 TFL and 2.0 sacks), senior offensive lineman Nicholas Schwitzgebel out of Cleveland, Ohio (started all 10 games at right guard), senior wide receiver Paxton Scott hailing from Dallas, Texas (team's leading receiver each of the last two years) and sophomore safety Sean Williams from Nolensville, Tennessee (34 tackles and a team-high two interceptions).
Four other Big Green players earned a spot on the third team in quarterback Nick Howard (fifth-year senior from Green Bay, Wis.) as an all-purpose player, linebacker Braden Mullen (junior from Glenview, Ill.), and offensive linemen Thomas Hartnett (senior from Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Konstantin Spörk (junior from Pulheim, Germany).
Dartmouth, which has won more Ivy League titles (20) than any other team in the Ancient Eight, opens the 2023 season on Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. in the Granite Bowl against the New Hampshire Wildcats in Durham. A video stream of the game will be available on FloSports (subscription required), and fans can opt for a free audio broadcast featuring Brett Franklin and Matt Corsetti on the call through the official website of Dartmouth Athletics, DartmouthSports.com.
