TOWSON, Md. — The Dartmouth volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-13) road loss to four-time defending CAA champion Towson on Saturday afternoon at SECU Arena to conclude the Morgan State/Towson Invitational.
The Big Green fell to 0-3 on the season while the Tigers improved to 4-1.
Kauany Gutz tallied a team-high eight kills against a stingy Towson defense that ranked third nationally in opponent hitting percentage last season. Gutz was also responsible for a team-high eight digs, while
Makenzie Arent and
Karen Murphy totaled 10 assists apiece. Nina Cajic led Towson with 10 kills and Irbe Lazda put together an efficient eight-kill performance at a .571 clip. The Tigers' offense erupted for a .419 hitting percentage, including a .519 showing in the third set.
Dartmouth's slow start was marked by a sub .100 hitting percentage in the opening set. The Big Green found themselves quickly trailing 13-4 and the Tiger advantage ballooned to 20-7 before Dartmouth was able to come up with four of the next six points, including consecutive kills by
Ava Roberts and Gutz.
The Big Green fared better in the second set, despite seeing a 17-10 deficit. A much-needed three-point spurt, which featured consecutive aces from Arent, brought Dartmouth back within four. Gutz later compiled back-to-back kills to remain within striking distance, but a pair of service errors proved costly down the stretch.
Towson picked up the first four points of the third and final set and didn't look back on its way to an efficient match-sealing effort. Dartmouth salvaged some momentum with a three-point run to bring the score to 17-12 midway through the game, but this time it was hitting errors that kept the Big Green from mounting a comeback.
