Bringing home wins despite the pouring rain on the road
It's raining, it's pouring, the Big Green are scoring – winning goals that is. The men's and women's soccer teams headed out on the road last week to open the Ivy League schedule. Despite heavy rains at both locations the teams came home victorious. Sophomore Sam Fenton scored the go-ahead goal to down the Princeton Tigers, while Emily Hardy came up big in net to secure a 1-0 win for the women at Yale.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named The Richards Group Athletes of the week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Sam Fenton, So., Mount Laurel, N.J., D, Men's Soccer
Fenton played the full 90 minutes in both games for the men's soccer program this past week. He played a key role in the Big Green's 2-1 victory over Princeton in the Ivy League opener, including scoring the game-winning goal in the 69th minute as well as playing most of the game on the defensive end.
With the game tied at one Kristian Feed created offense off a broken corner kick opportunity. Feed corralled the ball outside of the 18-yard box following a corner and whipped the ball toward the net, which was headed into the goal by Fenton, who has two goals in his last three games.
In other accolades, Fenton was named the Ivy League Men's Soccer Defender of the Week.
Emily Hardy, Sr., Boxford, Mass., G, Women's Soccer
Hardy recorded her sixth clean sheet of the season with a seven-save performance in the 1-0 victory over Yale on Saturday in the Big Green's Ivy League opener. In a game the featured very wet weather, the Boxford, Massachusetts native came up big in goal. Yale's best chance of the night came late in the first half when Meredith Phillips was sent through on goal on a breakaway. As she got into the box, she was met by the 5-8 Hardy, who came quickly off the line to make the 1v1 save.
In addition to DartmouthSports.com athlete of the week honors, Hardy was named the Ivy League Women's Soccer Defender of the Week on Monday.
