Total team Effort Leads Big Green to Coveted Ivy League Win Over Brown, 2-0

Ella Bowman scored both Dartmouth goals
HANOVER, N.H. — Sophomore Ava Carlson made a spectacular save on a first-quarter penalty stroke to keep the game scoreless, which was a sign of things to come. Carlson stopped all eight shots sent her way for her first collegiate shutout while freshman Ella Bowman scored twice to lead the Dartmouth field hockey team to a big 2-0 win over Brown on Saturday afternoon. The win gives the Big Green their first Ivy League victory since 2018, snapping a 25-game losing streak in Ivy games, while they improve to 4-3 overall heading into Sunday's 1 p.m. showdown against New Hampshire.
"It's an amazing feeling," said fifth year and co-captain Meg Barnes. "I'm honestly speechless. It's just a testament to how hard we've been working this season, how hard everyone who's come before me has worked to build up and build off each other to get this win today."
With the loss, Brown falls to 4-4 and 1-2 in Ivy play.
"Today was one of the most complete games of hockey that we've played during my time here," said Dartmouth head coach Mark Egner. "The girls really executed our game plan at a really fantastic level. We knew that Brown would do certain things as they started to adapt and mix their plan around, but our girls were able to keep sticking to our principles and playing the way we want to play. It was a real real team effort and really demonstrated the changes that are happening in our program — the shift in confidence and the belief in ourselves."
A defensive beginning saw just one total shot in the game's first 13+ minutes, coming from Dartmouth freshman Lucia Campano. Late in the first quarter, Brown had a flurry of four shots, including a penalty stroke which saw Carlson make an athletic save. Carlson went on to make two other saves in the final minute of the quarter.
Brown held a 7-1 in fourth-quarter shots, but Dartmouth maintained its composure and the defense came up big. A critical moment came with just over eight minutes remaining when the Bears had three shots off a penalty corner, but Galiotos made impressive defensive saves on two of them, while Carlson made a stop in the sequence as well, to keep the Big Green up by two.
From that point forward, the Bears had just two shots, only one on goal, as Dartmouth wrapped up the victory.
Final shots were 16-14 in favor of Dartmouth while the Big Green held a 7-3 edge in penalty corners. Carlson stopped all eight shots sent her way. Del Monte made six for Brown.
"Mark and I talked a lot about tiny changes to my technique that would make it a lot easier to make these saves," said Carlson. "The one big thing we talked about was keeping my hands up the whole time. It definitely made a difference."
With the win, Dartmouth now stands in fifth place in the Ivy League standings with four league games still remaining. The top four in the standings earn a bid to the Ivy League Tournament. The Big Green shift focus to nonleague action on Sunday when they host in-state rival New Hampshire at 1 p.m.
"Our team has really high expectations for this year and this is the first step towards that," said Egner. "But definitely, today is a big moment and something we have to enjoy. For those of us who have been with the program for a while, it's the first Ivy League win in a long time. We have to enjoy those moments.Â
"But this is by no means the last one that we're looking for," Egner continued. "We want to make sure that we're pushing to put ourselves in the Ivy League Tournament this year."

The Big Green used that momentum, controlling play in the second as they held a 5-0 edge in shots. Dartmouth capitalized with the game's opening goal as Bowman converted a penalty stroke after a sequence that began with an interception and strong effort from senior Lila Browne. The Big Green doubled their lead midway through the third quarter as sophomore Olivia Galiotos found Bowman off a penalty corner, who beat Brown goalkeeper Kylee Del Monte from a tough angle for an important insurance goal.While Ava Carlson stopped a first-quarter penalty stroke, Ella Bowman put one home in the second quarter to give the Big Green a 1-0 halftime lead!
